Took me a second to realize that gap was not designed into the engine.
Holy crap.

Definitely not my engine. It's a Merlin and they run in the low 6 figures - USED!

mmmmm...Rolls Royce Merlin V-12...Ain't nothin out there that sounds like it.
We have one Spitfire here in Ottawa. There are only 44 left flying anywhere in the world. The only thing in the air that sounds better then the Merlin in that plane is the 4 Merlins in an Avro Lancaster bomber. The Memphis Belle B-17 sounds pretty good too.

Good break,
That 6 cylinder crank, slows a classic harmonic fatigue break. Middle of the crank, starting at the oil hole drilling, to spread out to the webs. I guess it would have had the flywheel/damper combination replaced with the drive gear.
In a boat the engine runs at a constant speed, that in this case, looks like it was right on the cranks undamped resonance. Have they checked the other engines crank? Harvey.

They are seperate engines... It is not an issue with the crank but an issue with the harmonic... These harmonics weigh close to 75lbs and are filled with oil... The veins in the harmonic broke and all the oil moved to one side setting off a resonance frequency that the crank nor the block could withstand. After we took our spare block and did the good ol' strip n flip... we had our detroit puring once again

In this case we have an off centre failure, which would indicate flexing due to an out of balance component, rather than simple torsional vibrations. There is no indication that the crack has started at the oil hole, but rather that it commenced at the inner edge of the bearing surface, where there is a sudden difference in structure. The outer looks torn away as the last part to break off, and shows a sudden occurrence rather than fatigue. Overall this evidence does not indicate a torsional component in the forces involved.
