Transmission band adjustment
I seen in a few post that adjusting this band is a bear to do, as i look at the adjuster it looks like it is, my question is has anyone ever done this by removing the starter, I know it is a little more work but it looks like it might be a little easier to get to and that is why i am asking has anyone try this, It a 1992 Ls-l with the 2 3 drag,<>WOT<>Everyone in hear seems to be all on the right track in this, I put a external filter plus a cooler and it does ok but not what i think it should shift like, what do you all think on this

Once you do it a couple times it can be done in about 15 mins or so. Basically adjust it, drive it for a day to see any change then readjust as necessary.

I always remove the starter to adjust the band clamp. It keeps my knuckles a nice skin tone and not all redish color.

It sounds like you went a little too far. Back it off 1/2 turn and try again. Also check in my locker for Brake Band Adjustment and Brake Band Specs.

When you do the adjustment, you need to do it right, the first time. Tighten the adjuster screw down, till it is just tight, about as tight as you can get with a 3"/75mm long spanner, then unscrew it 3 full turns, lock the lock nut. Don't just screw it in a bit, or you will be doing it many times, and still not know if it is right. What you are doing when you tighten it up, is to squeeze the band tight on the drum, to take all the slack out. Then you undo it 3 turns, to set the right clearance. This is important to have the right timing, between the band and the high clutch operation. Harvey.

I'm in the middle of this job right now; so i need some quick responses..
I've loosened the lock nut, then I tightened the adjuster nut as tight a one finger could get it, estimating the 6.5ft/lb spec, then I backed the adjuster off 3 full 360 degree rotations. Do I then tighten the locking nut and call it a day? Second question: If I screw up and overloosen the adjuster nut, what will happen?

If you overloosen the adjuster, the brake band will become disconnected and the trans will need to be taken apart.

Yes you are tightening it all the way, then loosening 3 turns. Read OT's post ^^^.
If you tighten all the way, you will lose reverse and other bad things. Think of it like drum brakes, what would happen if you installed new brake shoes and then adjusted them so that they were fully tight against the drum...
