Re: 97 to 92 engine

Maybe al little more explanation - then more wires ? deletes add ons, differences, locations. I do not have a visual comparison. I know there are fewer 97s than any other years.

Re: 97 to 92 engine

What's the reason for your question, doing a swap?

Re: 97 to 92 engine

85k IS low miles.

There is one "extra" wire that goes to the passenger side rear of the engine to the EGR temperature sensor. You can compare the wiring on the later engine to add it into the harness.
The last time I did this I just used a removable bullet connection to the body mounted engine harness with the bullet conector beside the factory connection.

Re: 97 to 92 engine

Yes It is low miles, lost the transmission way back and could not afford to do quality rebuild. That done now it is time for it to work. I have 5K in the trans, all of Lan's chips but sorry I did not get his valve body. SVXs do not like long 15 mile steep grades. Love the cars especially trips to AZ and NV. Quick but not real fast, good gas mils, and cheap insurance. Iam 75 so this is my last GT. The 97 engine was just insurance. No time for rebuilds. I have had the car since 93.

Re: 97 to 92 engine

LAN still can produce valve bodies.
I have one in my Claret, one in my Pearlie and my son Nick has one in his Black 96.
IMHO they are well worth the money.

Re: 97 to 92 engine

1) The engine wiring harness is different between the two with the ODB1 harness having a EGR temperature sensor plug. From what it looks like the California and Federal engine OBD1 wiring harnesses are the same with the Federal setup lacking the temp sensor.

2) The emissions/evap hoses are routed differently with causes the TB and Upper Intake Manifold to be different part numbers based on having different pipe/port locations. You can reconfigure the OBD2 manifold and TB setup to work as an OBD1 setup for 50 bucks worth of hoses from Subaru. Conversely you can swap on an entire ODB1 upper manifold assembly onto the OBD2 engine since the front and rear hardlines are the same.

Re: 97 to 92 engine

Thanks Woods77 You have clarified a lot. I also considered using the engine in a porsche 914 with a 2 wheels drive SVX trans. I like auto trams. I have had several 914s through the years. AnotherSteve
