Pulling Motor
I am approaching 120k and would really like to yank my engine out and give it the old once over (valve cover gaskets, front seals, hoses, etc) but i really don't want to open the refrigerant system since this is never a good idea... is there a way to suspend the a/c compressor out of the way and still get the motor out? If there isn't, I will probably just do the stuff with the engine in the car. which means I will do less than i would like.

I just saw a picture of that a couple days ago. You can unbolt the compressor and swing it to the side while still keeping the AC lines attached. Just be careful you don't bend anything.
Edit: Here you go, borrowed this from svx_commuter's locker:

The worst thing you can do is open the system. If you do, you have to replace the receiver/dryer as the desiccant becomes saturated from the moisture in the air in minutes, and you have to replace o-rings (which can be hard to get in the correct size) not to mention that contaminants can get in the hoses, and I don't want a clogged expansion valve or a bent compressor valve.
