Re: Helix Throttle Body Spacer
No, you want to make the head to lower intake manifold. Completely separate the intake manifold from the head to keep the heat out of it all. The gaskets are readily available from the dealer. Even 4mm would work fine with a phenolic material to keep the heat out of the intake manifold. If you have ever leaned your hand on the intake manifold after a long highway drive you will understand how hot it gets from the heads transferring heat to it.
The main benefit of this is not to increase the volume of the intake manifold, but to keep the heat from the engine block out of it. With the design of the iris valve (when working correctly) the intake manifold is setup very well to go from long runner to short runner as the RPMs increase and the tiny amount of extra volume from spacing the intake manifold up or spacing out the throttlebody will make no noticeable difference. If you want to make a real difference in how the engine breaths, do some head work, cams and valve work. The intake is designed very well from air box to head. |

Re: Helix Throttle Body Spacer
Either would work, Ive been using phenolic spacers on mustang 5.0
since 87...and the ones we used on those car, split the upper and lower intake. Simple, easy and effective. The lower one looks like more of a pain to install, but youd be stopping the heat sooner. The upper ones would increase runner length a bit would could also help. Ill check both possibilities

Re: Helix Throttle Body Spacer
Not to beat a dead horse here, but is anyone keeping track of the direction this thread is going? Just eyeballing the pic of the Helix spacer, I'm going to guess that it's at least one inch thick (25.4mm). You're now discussing basically a thick phenolic gasket (4mm). You will not see the results that have been seen with a 25.4mm thick spacer.

I like using only Subaru factory gaskets. I have no other source for intake manifold gaskets. Does this mean your guy is done with my throttle body and wants to ship it back to me?

Re: Helix Throttle Body Spacer
the area in question is exactly what I was thinking
these where made for, but in a few post it made it sound as if there was another area (new to me haha) that someone was wanting spacers made for. Tom, it should be coming back to you soon buddy, do you miss it ? haha. If all goes well Ill have a prototype to try on my car in about a week As for the Phenolic spacers , I should have an answer on those soon too. I may have to start a thread on how many people may be in for the intake spacers and how many pairs of those we can expect to maybe move in the first few months. As for the gaskets, I use OEM only, Ive tried other brands and they are noticeably inferior to factory gaskets.

Re: Helix Throttle Body Spacer
got the 1st TB spacer made..
going to try to test fit it this week and then see what sort of results we get from it. Im confident the improvement will be there, all my other cars have these spacers already on them ( my vehicross etc...) Once I get all the little details worked out, longer bolts, extra gaskets etc I hope to have them on the market by the end of the month.

Re: Helix Throttle Body Spacer
Dayle,
Impressive! Nice machining work. My concern continues to be being able to bolt the spacer and TB and Snorkus all on without having to take a 10# sledge to the firewall. Bill

Re: Helix Throttle Body Spacer
It is one inch thick.
It should bolt on without a problem. I have had it in my hands and the machining was very nice indeed.

Re: Helix Throttle Body Spacer
How much of an improvement will you see with our multiport injection...? Spacers were more useful for carb/throttle body injection I believe. Without a pre and post Dyno chart, I would pump the cost of a spacer towards a stickier set of tires. Easy DIY and pretty to look at might be it's main advantages.
If the $200 invested on Dyno runs showed some HP/torque increase, I would see this product selling better. |
