Re: Timing belt broke, caused collateral damage
Why would that cause the head gasket to blow? I simply ask because I'm curious.

Re: Timing belt broke, caused collateral damage
lol, Keith's head gaskets blow every time he opens his glovebox. He probably just blew them when he dropped the soap in the shower this morning

Keith Actually, I only had one head gasket blow. The end of my cam shaft was rusted and so was the pin in the pulley. That threw the right side bank out of time and made the engine run badly. I took it to a dealer, and they kept trying different things for 6 weeks and a day.. unable to determine the problem. Finally they ran it so much with that "unknown" condition, that they finally blew the head gasket. Strangely, it was the one on the side with the cam shaft-cam shaft pulley problem. They tested for the head-gasket problem when they first got it into the dealership, and showed no problem... something about a radiator test... I don't know how that works, but that is what they said. After weeks of messing with it, they finally came up with the 6 week test and found whatever they were looking for in the cooling system. There you go, smartly paints! YT will tell you that I am Right. Soooo... that only leaves one option for you... the "W" word Keith |

Re: Timing belt broke, caused collateral damage
Back to serious... I wasn't talking about which way the water flows after the head gasket is blown. Not sure but I would venture a guess that the pressure during the compression cycle combined with ignition could exceed the few lbs of pressure in the cooling system.
There are people on this form that know that the camshaft-camshaft pulley condition can cause the head gasket problem. I expect they will show their intelligent heads at any moment! Keith (maybe it was the other Tom, or maybe SVX files) |

And a new set of head gaskets

Re: Timing belt broke, caused collateral damage
I understand but the ignition timing was not effected by the cam, so there is no excessive pressure upon combustion.
My point about the HG failure was that failures occur starting in the coolant jacket and work their way to the compression ring. Not from the compression ring to the coolant jacket Tom |

i can see how the OP would have a problem with his pulley being messed up and not be able to tourque down enough not to move, but if its rusted doesnt that mean it doesnt move out of allignment. i too, am with YT on this, with your engine out of time (tune) you would have risked detonation and possible piston damage i would think before it overheated.

Re: Timing belt broke, caused collateral damage
Agreed, the dealer told you this because they maybe blew your headgaskets during testing and then blamed your cam problem. Or it was preexisting.
At any rate, I dont think anyone here will attest that slight cam timing problems can blow a head gasket. I think you just got lucky and had both coincidentally. At least we found a relatively common problem with the cams, so diagnosing this will be easier for other members. |

If the passenger side is retarded it does not affect the ignition timing. The ignition timing is triggered by the drivers side cam. One of or 93s, Christine had the first (to my knowledge) recorded worn cam sprocket/cam groove problem and it took forever to locate and repair. I can not see how a retarded cam timing issue/event would cause a detonation event. I could be wrong, and if I am please feel free to tell me how or why.

Re: Timing belt broke, caused collateral damage
Not pointing fingers but this is why we should adhere to torque specs when doing t-belts/reseal.
