SVX in Snow

Since my battlewagon decided it needs a break, there is a very good chance I'll be making the SVX roadworthy and taking it to school in Erie.

Has anyone here driven one of these through snow? Is it tolerable, or am I going to immediately regret this decision?

Regret driving an SVX on the snow?

^^First Place daily driven car at Snow-Cross 2008.

With a set of snow tires there are few vehicles out there that are more capable or confidence inspiring than the SVX.

:-)

No, it's much, much more fun than my 3.0R Outback :-) !

You will love it. Unfortunately it's been exceptionally warm this year - +4C, no snow. Just rain every day :-(

The photos are from last winter ice track days.

That first pic is worthy of the annual calendar.

Re: SVX in Snow

I passed a stuck plow truck going up a snow covered hill . Thinking of putting a plow on mine. Just to do my driveway.

Re: SVX in Snow

I put some Yoko Ice Guards on it last week and took it out in the storm a few days back.

While I'm used to a 1st gen Legacy wagon with a 5mt, the SVX surprised me when it went everywhere I wanted. I stopped on the steepest and iciest hill I could find, and it clawed it's way up.

Absolutely fantastic.

Re: SVX in Snow

It's the best car in the snow that I've ever driven. Far better control than our '97 or 2012 Outback. The only thing that will stop it is snow depth. As in over the bumper deep.

i don't know that the SVX was actually better in the snow than my LGT, but i felt more confident in it. maybe because it was heavier and lower.

get some snow tires, and practice in a snow-covered parking lot. they are amazing in the snow, but just remember even the best AWD and tires won't stop on ice, so be careful.

I have to agree. In terms of AWD/4WD I've driven several Jeep Cherokees, '00 Subaru Legacy GT (5MT and rear LSD), '05 STi in snow/ice. Both Subies with winter tires on them. The SVX with all seasons felt stabler, easier to handle, and more confident on snow covered roads than any of them. The Jeeps were better for going through fields and the STi is the clear choice for asshattery But for guaranteeing that you get there and back, the SVX would be the winner.

Mobility? No regrets. Body rot from road salt? Plenty of regret.

It'll do better than most other Subarus if the transfer clutch and C solenoid is working properly. Especially if you get some 205/55/16 snow tires. They're heavier and a lot more planted. The rear viscous LSD helps as well.

Re: SVX in Snow

My SVXi were so good in the snow.

I was stuck for twice.
One, when the transfer clutch was not working properly.
Second, the ground clearance. I was stuck at the parking lot
of 12" of snow. I still got out without any help after 10mins.

Re: SVX in Snow

So far this winter I have been unimpressed with my svx in the snow.
I got stuck in 6 inches of snow, if you don't have speed when you go threw it your screwed. The car is too low so it get under it and lifts it, then your wheel are off the ground. Then you have to get a shovel try to get under the car to get it back on the wheels good luck with that your better off calling a tow truck...
