Painting my car
So here is the deal...this summer i plan on trying to fix most of the dents and painting the car...i am gonna have to rattle can it since i dont have 2 grand to spend on a paint job.
my question to you gentlemen is anyone have any idea how many cans it is gonna take and tips on painting? i plan on leaving it as close to the original green as possible but with a slight change...i want to make the roof and trunk lid a light cream color...i saw a car when i was younger with this color combo and i always thought it was pretty cool. thanks, Jared

Re: Painting my car
I see this plan ending badly. Rattle can paint job, Teal and Cream color combo.
I would recommend that you do the prep work and take it to a shop to be painted.

Re: Painting my car
If you plan on using those cans they sell at the auto parts store, that's made especially for exterior applications you will be spending a lot of money. I used a can on my work truck on the hood and was only able to apply 2 coats on one side of the hood and it still needed about another 10 to really look like it did something. Your better off vinyl wrapping your car with a paint brush for only like $350. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiQntbVmTp0

Re: Painting my car
Plastidip is an affordable alternative to painting, check out dipyourcar.com for advice and details. I've been looking at the pro car kit for a while but decided my body wasn't straight enough to do it.

Re: Painting my car
Keep in mind, you are using enamel paint. I'm not sure what type of paint is on the SVX but some paints react differently on other types. Also remember you will be painting on top of a clear coat. Sanding and even priming may be neccessary. Don't rush and don't cut corners. It's not an easy or cheap fix. Do it right the first time.

Re: Painting my car
its one of those things where its better to not do it at all then do it half ass. I understand the budget issues, but your gonna have to look at it everyday. If your already fixing the dents then the vinyl wrap and plasti dip are very viable options.

Re: Painting my car
I did plan on sanding it down and primeing it since I was gonna fix the dents and such in sections and this would only be a temporary paint job...i guess I should have mentioned that in the beginning...anything would be better than the rust and sun spots now... I just dont want it looking like **** anymore :/ eventually I would have it professionaly done

Re: Painting my car
I agree with the plasti dip recommendation. It's like $300 for the kit and it wont look half bad.

Re: Painting my car
If you do what you say . When you go to get it pro Painted the prep is going to be a lot harder. When you buy the cans, buy it in case lots. The colors in each case have a paint code and batch match . A can from different cases may be different shades. My suggestion is do a great prep job and find a Macco near you. It will come out better and might cost you less.

Re: Painting my car
Body still needs to be straight and have a good surface to plastidip. But it's supposed to be a lot easier to get a good finish with it than it is with regular car paint, and you can just peel it off and start over if you screw up. And prepping it shouldn't take as much time.

Re: Painting my car
yeah i planned on fixing the dents and the tiny rusts spots before doing anything...this is probably gonna take me a couple of weeks because im gonna have to do this in sections unfortunately i use my car everyday so what i plan on doing is starting with the sections that need the least work for practice then move on to the harder sections and see how it goes...i think for some sections im gonna have to prime them though

Re: Painting my car
Plastic dip is great if you are happy with a white, red or black car. I looked for other colors did not see any

I parked next to that car (Satin brown VW GTI for those who didn't watch the vid) one day, and I have to say it looked really good (except for the wheels - too much tire stretch by far). Looked just like chocolate, and a very nice finish. These guys have a lot of colors too: https://www.dipyourcar.com/pages.php?pageid=9

Re: Painting my car
I would never drive a car that has had that done to it.
