: sigh :
I already know this can't be a good sign, right? Did I mention it smells of gas? FML and yes... that's a 3rd dipping... and no, my car isn't running, I decided to check the oil for whatever reason thinking about ordering a timing belt... and then I had to see... smell... this.

Re: : sigh :
I honestly have no clue.... was hoping to get some more insight here from other owners. I was thinking maybe it would have something to do with a head gasket? but I have no idea... maybe that's the wrong thing...
I don't remember ever seeing any smoke or anything coming out of the rear end though so I dunno... plus it never really ran rough or gave me any issues really while running.... If its rings and/or head gaskets, what should I do? If I get the parts, there's a school locally that would probably do the work for free... but it would take months maybe. Which is fine, it's just sitting now... but I dunno. I do have 192k on it... is it worth investing in at all? (engine wise I mean) rebuild it maybe? I don't really have any idea on what to do with this point (aside from just setting the entire car on fire and calling it a day ) Torn.

And I am going to assume that you are concerned that it is indicating an overfilled condition. Take the wet dipstick away from the car and see if you can set the oil on the dipstick with a propane lighter. If it catches on fire that shows a large amount of gasoline in the oil pan. This could indicate a leaking fuel injector.

Re: : sigh :
IF there's no gasoline in the oil then the following MIGHT apply.
I know some Legacy/Impreza EJ22 owners (like me) have experienced a phenomenon where they check the oil, find it to be a quart low, then add a quart and the next day find that they have overfilled it by a quart. That's the first thing that came to mind when I saw your picture. It's something about the layout/orientation of the oil pan/dipstick in the flat 4 engine and specific conditions under which the dipstick might deceive you when you check it. There are threads about it over on the Ultimate Subaru Message Board- I got lost in the 'whys' and 'wherefores' I just know it's happened to me. Since the EG33 is an extension of the EJ22, the same may apply. Have you recently checked the oil and found it to be a quart low and then added a quart? |

Re: : sigh :
I haven't attempted to set my oil stick on fire yet, though I may do that today.
I remember having an oil change only 1,500 some odd miles back but checked it shortly after and don't remember it being amiss. (I always check it after they do it after getting home just in case). Never seem to be able to trust anyone. I've decided to take it one step at a time I guess and at least get it running, I hope, again ... with a $100 timing belt. Maybe I can take it somewhere to have it tested or inspected to see if it actually is severe and if my HG is blown amongst other possible issues this older car may have. and yes svxfiles, you are correct in your assumption on my post. Slowly moving forward with this... winter is coming and I really hope to have a warm car to drive in.

Re: : sigh :
My car is currently sitting idle because the timing belt broke a few months back and I had it towed back home. This is just something else to add to the mix. I think timing belts are around 96 some odd dollars so I just rounded up.

Re: : sigh :
if your car has been sitting for a few months and not been started all of the oil will bleed out of the lifters fall from the heads etc and look over filled...i think the method of checking is starting the engine...let it run for a sec than check the oil after 3 min of sitting??
