Higher stall speed torque convertor
Has anyone looked into or tried a higher stall speed torque convertor? Just thinking that with the tall gearing, it might help the off line performance and would not negatively affect the high speed performance.

I've thought the same thing, but have no idea who would have one.
You guys w/level10 do they have a higher-stall speed TC? |

Re: Higher stall speed torque convertor
You can get your existing TC modified by Level 10 for $600.
I think the TC mod helps a little, but it is not like adding nitrous or anythng If I was not having my tranny rebuilt at the same time, I doubt if I'd bother, but that's just my opinion Quote:

It'd make it launch better, but in turn it would help launch the tranny to the rebuilders much sooner, the best thing would be get a lower geared tranny and rear diff, say...out of a Turbo Legacy, they have the same amount of clutch packs as the SVX (more than a standard Legacy tranny) they also have a LSD rear diff and 3.90 gears which are lower than the 3.54's in the SVX (of course the standard Legacy's had 4.11's very low gears).
If you look around you'll likely to find one for less than $1000, and I garrantee it'll make a bigger difference than any other mod in your timeslips (except maybe nitrous) and lower gears are easier on your tranny. Just something for you to think about

I've experienced the same as SVXTypeR. I lost some low end power with the high stall speed TC.

Has anyone else had this modification done to their car? Instead of just the 'feel' of low end power loss, does anyone have any 0-60, 1/4 mile or dyno data of the difference? Specifically, I'm looking for differences in 1/4 mile time. Thanks for any info.

my old fwd L had a higher stall tc in it...It seemed to make the engine wind up a tiny tiny bit faster, but that's about all. I could launch it at a higher RPM, but being fwd...it didnt get to the ground
now...Dont quote me on this, but I seem to recall somebody saying that you cant or shouldnt use a high stall tc with the 4.44 tranny. I wanna say svxfiles would probly know if tha's true or not

The stall speed is a variable dependent on design, engine power, and perhaps, gearing. For example, take a C-6 torque converter behind an inline 6, and it has a stall speed of say 2400 rpm. Take the same TQ behind a 351M and it now has a stall speed of 3000rpm. If you could bolt it to a 460, it now has a stall speed of 3500rpm, and your very hot transmission launches great untill it melts! A 4.44 Outback torque converter should have a slightly higher stall speed than say a SVX TQ, but it is not really noticable. (Been there, done that.) An Impreza/Legacy TQ could cause your trans to run hotter and fail, not reccomended. For stock gears you can ONLY use a SVX TQ. Unless you like replacing things. With a 4.44 you can use either a SVX TQ or a 4.44 TQ with no ill results. Tom I hope this helps.

I understand the extra heat that could be generated. All of my cars have a tranny cooler, except the SVX.

And that differance could be explained by different power levels and engine state of tune. I know my Claret has a SVX TQ, my Pearlie had a OB TQ, Nicks has an OB, and I don't remember the "other Pearlie". However my Claret is the only one that I drag raced.
