That's got to be a frightening experience...
A total loss of steering connection has to be a mechanical failure at one of the connections. -Steering wheel to steering column -Steering column tilt/slide mechanism -One of the u-joint couplers in the engine bay -Stripped pinion/rack gear inside the steering rack itself Any failure of the hydraulic system (belt, pump, lines, fluid loss/leaks/air bubbles) would ony cause a difference in the steering feel (stiffness, jumpy steering, etc) but not a loss of connection to the front wheels. The only thing that can cause that is metal breaking or the u-joints sliding off their shafts.
