Cylinder pitting
Hey all,
I found some light pitting in several of the cylinders in my latest block. I've rarely heard of them in flat engines and I was curious if any of you had run across this issue in an EG33. Thanks.

I have only seen the inside of one, but you could still see the crosshatch and every cylinder was true and round. Surface quality of the cylinders was surprisingly good. It had nearly 200k miles.

^The one I dismantled looks like this. Seems perfectly fine.

I have terrible luck with EG33's. I'm on my third block. Hopefully this is just surface marring and I can do a light hone and get rid of it. I'm trying to avoid dropping a lot of money on the car right now. Getting married in October.

you have a k&n or similar air filter? that's the only time i have seen it.

I'm not sure. This engine came out of a parts car I just picked up and I tossed the filter without really looking at it.

only ones i have seen with cylinder wall pitting without other signs of detonation such as pitted pistons have had a k&n or even worse the plain foam ones. i would just get it rehoned if they aren't that deep but if they are deep you may want to rebore.

Boring it out is what I'm trying to avoid. Pistons are expensive

If the pitting is up at the top 30mm of the bore, it will is not good. If it is just light small pits down around the bore It won't worry it too much, just hold some oil.
When I was building two-strokes, I allowed the bore to rust, before honing to form the small oil holding pits. Harvey.

I would just do a light hone to smooth the surface, don't try to hone them right out.
