ECU tune TCU chip
Hi all,
I have one of the new TCU chips from LAN, trying to decide whether to install in 92 w/stock transmission or 92 with 4.44. The 92 with the 444 has an abrupt 2nd gear shift, with slushy 2-3 and 3-4 shifts... I have read a few positive reviews on installation into the stock geared auto, anyone have one in a 4.44?

Re: ECU tune TCU chip
I believe Tom, aka SVXfiles has one as well as an upgraded valve body in his claret with 4.44's and other mods, not 100% sure on the TCU, but I believe it does. From driving it, it shifted fast and firm but again, it also has the modified valve body to help. I have also driven Tom's "Christine" with stock gears and the modified maps make a big difference and really improve the shift points, esepcially the 1-2 upshift and 2-1 downshift. This car does have the modified valve body for sure. The one thing is that the ones in Tom's cars do not have the newest "update" with the modified line pressure maps but that should only improve the feel and shifting even more.

All 4.44s shift like a rock from first to second but with the TCU they (both stock and 4.44s) make better use of first and second. (The valve body REALLY fixes the slow 2-3 shift, btw.) Hmmmm, I guess the only "logical" thing to do is put a TCU in "Petes Pearlie", a mostly stock 4.44 for comparison! "Petes Pearlie" was John Hoffman's son's car for those of you who are keeping track. OK, for "science" I will install the newest TCU in the Pearlie tomorrow morning before a two hour back road run to the Doctors and report back. Gordon, I think that I would install the chip in the stock one first, because it will make such a big differance. You can always do Vicious later.

Re: ECU tune TCU chip
Thanks for the fast response! Decision made, I will install into 92 with stock gears.
I have just the chip, bought a Tyco socket from Newark. Do I have to remove the ECU too, or will the TCU come out on its own?

Re: ECU tune TCU chip
I have to remove both to get to the TCU.
A forehead mounted light, and a long handled 10 mm ratcheting box end is your friend.

Re: ECU tune TCU chip
Yeah, this is easily one of my least favorite things to do on the svx. So uncomfortable. And I'm a tall guy and have long arms, so getting under there to switch things around is a PAIN!
