Re: Transmission flush
The first time I had it done, they used an air compressor to blow it back out from my cooling line. Needless to say I had excessive binding and later lost my rear transfer clutches, nor would they take responsibility for that.

Every 30,000 would be great! It depends on who you buy it from. The kits that I use come with the rubber gasket, the filter, and the O-ring. from Subaru they come separately.

Re: Transmission flush
If you do the change and then install an external filter, you will probably not have to do that one again. Just change the canister filter.

Re: Transmission flush
Our flush machine at work measures how much pressure the car itself makes, and then just matches that. If you're using high pressure air you're almost sure to damage something, but running the same pressure as the tranny normally does is harmless, and replacing all of the oil at once is not in itself a bad thing.

Re: Transmission flush
I agree with svxfiles, change the internal tranny filter & gasket/o ring at 30,000 miles. If you have an external spin on filter GREAT, change it at 5,000 mile intervals.
The biggest issue IMHO is finding a honest reputable service location. Do yourself a big favor and do some research on who's the best in your area for a tranny service.

Re: Transmission flush
Ensteele,
You must change the internal filter around 30,000 intervals to insure the best flow of ATF, the longer that filter is left in, the more it restricts ATF flow.

Re: Transmission flush
The internal filter is much more coarse than the canister filter. If you have one, it should take care of all of the particles.

Re: Transmission flush
I agree doing it yourself is the best way of 'done right':, I'm just getting to old (67) to crawl under there. The last big job I did was change the front half shafts, I only blew my top about 20 times per side.

Re: Transmission flush
The problem with just doing a "drain and refill" vs a flush/exchange, is just draining the pan does not get all the fluid out. The flush machine we have at work uses two hoses, you unplug one of the tranny lines (We use the one that comes out of the front of the transmission, as that is the one that comes from the pump) and the "dirty" line connects to the tranny side, and the "clean" side connects to the one that was disconnected from the tranny, that goes to the cooler. It uses the transmission to pump the dirty fluid out, and it's own internal pump to pump the new fluid into the tranny, but it is pressure regulated to the same pressure as the pressure of the fluid that is coming out of the tranny.
Drain and refill works if the fluid's not dirty, but it most cases a fluid exchange is the way to go. Don't forget to change the diff fluid as well. As for just changing the filter? don't forget, that the fluid does not just get dirty, it, like engine oil, also has additives in it that wear out over time. You wouldn't change your engine oil filter without changing the fluid too, would you? I would change mine every 30,000 miles, that $120 for a flush is a lot cheaper than a new transmission! And I've seen plenty of cars come into my work with 200,000+ miles on them (granted, not SVXes) and the tranny shifts like brand new, and they have had the transmission fluid changed regularly.
