Bad Gas??
On Friday, I filled up the SVX at a Super America station. It ran fine until Sunday. Sunday morning (30 miles after the fillup) I drove to the store and as I pulled into the space, the car sputtered and died. It wouldn't restart. I went into the store to let it sit and when I came out it fired up for about a half a second then died. It wouldn't fire after that. Naim and I towed the car to the garage. Hours later, it still wouldn't fire. The computer is giving the "All OK" flash when I pull the codes.
Here is what I have tried so far to diagnose the problem: 1. Change Fuel filter 2. Check for fuel flow during startup. 3. Checked for ECU codes 4. Swapped in a spare ECU Last night I went to work on it and it fired up for a half second again, then no fire. I would think if it was electrical, it would throw a code. The fuel pump is working, but I haven't measured output flow. I'm tempted to throw a few cans of isopropyl in the tank and let it sit for 24 hours. Any thoughts? Doug

the timing belt can also have this impact (if it is somehow uncalibrated). can also be spark plugs....

I need to look through the service books to see what the fuel pump should be outputting.

what about injector sensors or a weak gas pump

Doug,
So, the engine turns over fine, just doesn't "catch"? Could the exciter be bad, thus no signal for the coils to fire? Line dry probably isn't a bad idea, I'm just not sure that water in the gas would totally keep the engine from running (that would take a lot of water!) -Bill

It could be an igniter, where is it on the SVX? I have a spare engine and a 5 speed project I can borrow parts from. Doug

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind.
I'll try a little of the isopropyl, try and measure the fuel pump's volume and pressure, then check the igniter. Doug

Found the problem. There was no compression on the driver's side cylinder bank because...
The timing belt slipped. The timing belt shield broke and a chunk fell into the pulley and allowed the belt to slip. I can't figure out why it didn't throw a code. Shouldn't it if the cam angle sensors don't match readings?? Doug

The cam position sensor was working ok, it was just telling the ECU that the wrong set of three cylinders were ready to fire. you know who told you so. Harvey.
