Or you can put up 14s with a stock motored SVX with 150k on it and a 4.11 auto so you're not cruising like a gen 2 VW Jetta auto on the highway. On a real track though there's a reason why those british dinosaurs can keep up with modern tech with their pre-ww2 technology and underpowered motors. The best part is they look so much better than any of the unispired designs today a well. Congrats Tom, you're right where we should be at the moment if I ever get the garage done and can figure out why I was griding through gears like there was no tomorrow on my 15.5 run.

You forgot to add the 14.08 I ran like 6 months ago with nearly the same set up as Tom. |

Chike, without going into hijack mode, I'm interested to see that these times were delivered by guys using 4EAT autos ranging from 3.54 to 3.70 to 4.11 and 4.44. I have done a spreadsheet on autos to see where the speed ranges and power ranges fall, for my supercharger conversion. See my locker here How did you find the 4.44 on the road, particularly the highway? Pretty low? I had a 4.11 in my Legacy Twin Turbo. It was good at highway speeds, pretty quick in 3, and the bottom two gears were so low it would only hold 2 for a second or two on kickdown. I think the 4.11 is the chosen ratio, but I'd like to hear how the 4.44 worked on the road. Joe

I have four 4.44s.
I have installed many more. I have installed three 4.11s. I will only install a 4.11 if it is rebuilt! 3000 Engine rpm = 72 mph. BTW; With a 4.44, 6940 Engine rpm=10,000 driveshaft rpm. 10,000 driveshaft rpm = 2250 axle rpm 2250 axle rpm = 166.406mph 7500 peak rpm gives 10,000 driveshaft rpm =2433.09 axle rpm. With a stock size tire, 24.86” tall that translates into 179.94709 mph.

Thanks for the response Tom.
I'm presuming we are talking the same thing, 4.44 final drive, but using the 4 speed auto? I figure a 5 speed is going to have a different spread of ratios, and be a different machine to drive than the auto. I prefer the auto for a number of reasons, but for sure with the low number of ratios, they have their limitations. The main point of my question is this; how do they[4.44s] drive as a regular road vehicle? Are they acceptable? Do the lower ratios increase consumption? Is the noise level higher at highway speeds? Could I live with it? Joe

With 37% more torque in first, 31% more torque in second, and 25% more in third and fourth, they drive VERY well! Where I live with nothing but turns and hills, (and 0 spare time ) they are the perfect gears. Are they acceptable? The only person I have met who is not a fan of them, is Diana, who was raised with a 1600cc four speed manual transmission Pinto It sounds to her like its time to shift at 2500 rpm. Do the lower ratios increase consumption? Gas mileage is still good at 23-25 highway, and 18 city. Some have reported a mpg INCREASE with the 4.44s. Is the noise level higher at highway speeds? To me it is smoother. Could I live with it? I think so, in fact I think you would LOVE it. Drive one. Tom

However, respectfully, there is something funny in the maths of your last proposition. If 3000 =72mph, then 6940 = 72/3000x6940, which is 166.6mph [well, assuming torque converter locked and all, you know what I mean] This 166.6 is close to what's in my spreadsheet, but a good bit short of your 179.9 calculation. Would you have measured the size of the standard wheel off the vehicle? The rolling radius tends to be less than half the height of the wheel with the weight of the vehicle in place. It's the rolling radius that determines how far each revolution carries the car forward. 167 is a reasonable top speed in a country where some of our motorways [highways] have a 60 top limit! Joe

I'm hearing you buddy. My brother's JDM Forester Turbo has 4.44s, though manual. It MOVES when you push the Excitement Pedal. The 4.44 is sure to be able to take more punishment because of the torque handling. Decision made. I'll go for All The Fours. Joe

I pulled parts from an old document of mine without seeing that it was incomplete. With LAN's chip 7400-7500 is possable. If you have enough motor. BTW, I hardly ever see over 130.
