Cam Seal and Timing Belt
I am interested in purchasing a 97 Lsi with 170k miles. The Cam Seal (oil leak) and Timing Belt needs to be replaced. Is it a big DIY job or do I have to take it to the dealer. Also is the milage considered too high for SVX? What's the general cost of maitenence on SVX? Just don't want to spend 3k on buying and another 3k on repairing in the next couple of years.

I would not do a timing belt by yourself unless you KNOW what you are doing. Cam seals probably as well, especially with the engine design, is not that easy to get to. I would have a professional do it.

It is simply a big diy job. I replaced mine last summer along with the front and rear main crank seal. The hardest parts are going to be removing the crank pulley and breaking all the cam gear bolts free (they sell a tool for this but I just made one with about $5 of home depot supplies). other than that its pretty straight foward as long as you have some experience with mechanics.
oh and PS if you have patients dont let anyone scare you away from doing it. Just get a repair manual and follow it like the bible. I had no previous experience with cars besides changing oil before my svx and i havent found anything particularly challenging yet.

Thanks, guys. The feedback on this forum is fast!!! I have been to maxima.org and clublexus.com and neither compares to the quickness of the response I got here. You guys are great.
The owner of the car is asking for 3000, is it a good price (considering the money I will inevitably spen on the timing belt and cam seal)? I am taking the test drive this afternoon and will let you know how I feel. First time in an SVX ever. |

Good luck, it's a lot of fun to drive, i love mine. I bought mine for 4.5k, 94 LSi AWD, a few months ago, but only has 127k miles on it. I also am planning/saving around 5k for 5mt, exhaust, repaint, etc, and then start saving again for supercharger, and other fun toys. Worthwhile investment to me though, the car really feels good to me. After the 5mt, while saving for a sc, if another comes avialble for sale, i'll probably buy it, and put off the supercharger for a bit.

You might want to negotiate a lower price, or atleast get an estimate on the repairs. Depending on who you take it to for the repairs, you could be looking at $1400-$2000 in a shop bill. I recently got an estimate to relace the timing belt and the water pump for $1400. So I guess you have to ask yourself, if you didn't have to do anything to the car, would you pay $5000 for it? If you are going to relace the timing belt, I suggest that you put a new water pump on it while it's apart, the biggest cost is the labor getting into the timing belt and putting it back together again.

yeah look for a lower price. I pain 2k for my car last year and it had 195k and a leaky rear main seal and a pretty sad interior. then the mod bug bit me and I wanted a fresh engine so I swapped it and refreshed the entire engine and restored the interior. Honestly looking back on it I could have found an svx for alot less than I spent by the time I finished the swap and mods. then again I wouldnt have learned all kinds of stuff

I dunno, 3K isn't a bad price IMHO. It IS a 97 after all, even with high-ish mileage. I'd be willing to pay that, maybe minus a couple hundred for the timing belt and seals.

high mileage or not it is a 97 and is well worth 3k... That is if the body is in relatively good condition
