another one!

Hi! I'm Jim, from Iowa. The SVX first caught my eye in '92 as something I'd like to have someday. The styling, the features, the 30,000 plus window sticker. Ouch!!! Fast forward-2008. Finally got one! It's a teal 92,not really nice, and needing a lot of tlc.
I've lurked here on and off for a few years researching the problems related to the SVX, and having gone through the Harley stage, through the 3000GT stage, didn't think these would be much different as far as upkeep. Everyone wonders what the heck I'm doing with a car like this (I'm 55-NO WAY I'm ready for a Buick!!!) but hopefully after the problems are cured, I'll tear it apart and give it fresh paint and interior and enjoy it!

Welcome Jim, your arrived the same way as me. I hate to break this to you but, I think you will perfect your new purchase and start looking for #2. I'm also up there on the age ladder and trying hard not to justify #3, sitting, sadly, a short distance away. I've been asked why and all I can say is that that the SVX fits like a good shoe. There are a few others here on the forum who are in the same boat that might actually need rehab.

We saw the red UK one at our show a couple of years ago. It is the Brilliant Red colour I think.

Racecube's car is actually LHD with the Mica Red we did not get in England a pearlescent colour.

Welcome to the SVX community!

I see you are in the NJ area; there are a couple of members here that can help you out if you need any repairs done. Just look for AWD, Inc.

Cheers, and happy motoring

Well I finally have it in the driveway. 1996 SVX, Black. 160000kms

Back in 92 I worked next to a guy that had one, loved the look then, and have appreciated from afar until now.

My brother in law has a friend that had one in his shed, seems he was going too fast one day, went over some train tracks and bottomed out, It deployed both airbags, and struck the oil pan etc.

His insurance company totalled out the car, and he replaced the oil pan, and parked it in his shed.

The title is clean, not salvage, and he just wanted rid of it for a really good price.

So, it needs a bunch of things, and some tlc, but it drove really nice on the 200Kms to my place in Ajax, Ontario.

Currently it needs tires - flat for a while, they are all cracked
Some exhaust parts - some are a little flatter looking - I really have to get under it.
Brakes
Tranny has a really soft 2-3 shift
Both Fog lights don't work - Headlights are really foggy(sun deterioration)
Beige Steering Wheel, mine has a deployed airbag.
Check engine light is on

Plan of getting it going over the next month - and will have lots of n00b questions. Have looked at the sticky's and the other data.

Its my 14'th Subaru, so I know a little about them, but this one is quite different in quite a few areas.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Welcome to the club

If you're looking for a shop in your area*, I don't know who you should go to, but avoid SASS in Stratford like the plague that they are. If you're looking into some 'serious' work, i.e. tranny swaps and such, Planet Motorsport in Guelph do good work.

Take care!

*Stratford isn't really in your area, but I thought I should warn you in any case. Also, I'm from the north, and we think nothing of driving for several hours to get what we're after - because sometimes we have to

Thanks! And yeah, I got it from London, so driving is not a huge deal for me.

I have a local dealer whose service manager has a few SVX's, and loves them. Pricey though. And know a few great resources in the area.

Would not put Planet on that list, having had them work on one of my other cars though, semi-trained monkeys, not real mechanics. They excel in swapping parts, not fixing stuff.

I have had monkeys leave their banana peals in the car and found them when I picked it up. Congratulation on the car and it is great to hear you will get it on the road again.

In the event you're ever up in the Ottawa area, there's a really good shop in Gatineau. They recently sold an EG33 swapped Forester with a 5-speed on Ebay, and an SVX owner here has his car serviced exclusively by them.
