I ran a tank of 87 through my car a few weeks ago. The mileage was the same, but the car felt a little sluggish. It could have just been crappy grocery store gas or the octane. I don't really know. I don't think 87 is going to kill you, but for the minor increase in cost, I guess I'm not so worried about it.

My 2 cents
OK I am NOT A EXPERT on this matter but think about this.
Why would Subaru put right on the instrument cluster "unleaded premium only"? This is obviously not a selling point so why would it be there if it was not nessecary? I don't believe it would be. Years ago I had a 86 Subaru gl wagon and it would barely run off 87. You really did have to put 93 in it. I think just over the last couple of years Subaru has designed engines to work off of 87. Take into account the compression of the EG33 engine and its not surprising that they require 93. Here in the Pittsburgh area 93 is about $3.50 a gallon right now, but I see it as just one of the many expenses of having this car so I just pay it. |

Not entirely on topic, but I just scored 19 MPG on my last tank. Not great in general, but considering this was a 75% rush-hour, 25% racing (track) mix, I'm fairly pleased.

do the math and it doesn't make sense not to run premium @ 20cents x 16 gallons = $3.20 extra to fill up.if this is too much for your budget may i suggest a pair of jogging shoes or a scooter,I have wanted a Honda elite 150 for the better part of 20 years, after 4 years of looking i found a 86' locally for $900 mint with 2300 miles a dream i've had since 10 when i drove one new.And even thou it doesn't matter to me I get 69mpg all city driving,no BS like some hyped hybrid mpg

Also, it does not cost big oil .20 per gallon more to make higher octane fuel, so all you are doing is inflating their profit margin. I am sure that makes you happy??? Like I said before--if it floats your boat to pay more than necessary--knock yourself out. Lee
