Ugh, ruining a limited production 25 year old car is senseless.

I doubt most vehicles would stand up to an impact at that angle.

Type "small overlap crash tests" into the youtube search window. There are zillions of them, mostly NHTSA. Quite a few vehicles appear to stop intrusion at the A pillar, but by no means all of them do. It's a tough test.

I think the main reason it crumpled so much is that the rear wheel is on the wrong side.

It's a little known fact that wheels on the wrong side have been responsible for more SVX crashes than any other factor:

now with directional tires, having the wheels on backwards causes the stopping to not function correct. Directional tires don't skid right when they are on backwards from the way they were designed so yeah.
