Re: Is this revolutionary engine not a boxer?
no, it's an Opposed Piston Opposed Combustion Engine aka OPOC
a boxer aka flat is just a Horizontally-Opposed engine

Re: Is this revolutionary engine not a boxer?
This should help clear things up. It looks like a boxer motor, but has 2 pistons in each cylinder. Nifty design.

Re: Is this revolutionary engine not a boxer?
Now what are the advantages to such an engine other than being able to stick it in a poster box for shipping.
I'm guessing that it could have a greater combustion ratio which would be more apt to be used with a high octane/low btu fuel such as compressed gas with good results. Seems to me that it would be tough to lube the outer piston properly with a conventional oil pump set up. Is it a 2 stroke? Not seeing any valves in there?

The variable vane turbo is nothing new though, it has been used for years with great success... Nearly eliminates turbo lag and broadens the turbo's efficiency range by 3-4 times that of a gated turbo.... Why they have not been putting these into gas engines for the past 5-10 years is beyond me. I do love it though, just going to be a ***** to find an engine bay wide enough to pack it in unless it really is a small bore engine and my proportions are off Tom Last edited by TomsSVX; 11-01-2010 at 04:35 PM. |

Re: Is this revolutionary engine not a boxer?
It looks like an updated Junkers or Commer knocker, opposed piston two stroke, with phased pistons for port timing.
They have replaced the outer piston rocker links, with extra con rods, to put the crank on the same line as the pistons, where as the Commer Knocker had the crank under the piston line. This design of phasing the pistons to open the exhaust, before opening the inlets, and closing the exhaust ports before the inlets, provide a clean blow through savaging, and good pressure charging. Harvey.

Re: Is this revolutionary engine not a boxer?
Richard Pearse New Zealands 1st aviator ( also flew 9 months before the wright brothers did )
His engine was of unusual Horzontially/Opposed Piston design. It was a double acting Opposed piston twin cylinder. It was based on steam engine cylinder principles. Due to being very little info drawings or even actual fuel powered engines availble to look at.. (There were only 2 other petrol engined Automobles In the south island -Aprox 1899 ) It had about 15hp. Had an exposed crank you would have to grease. Could only run it for a little while at a time.

Re: Is this revolutionary engine not a boxer?
Seems to be a very promising design.
I would love to hear one run.
