gear ratio question
is the gear ratio difference (4.11, 4.44, etc) in the combination of the transmission, fron differential, and rear differential or just the front and rear differentials? is there actually a gearing difference in the transmission itself?

Depends
Most (but not ALL) Subaru cars use a common front and rear differential ratio (3.545:1, 3.70:1, 3.90:1, 4.11:1, and 4.44:1) in both automatic and manual transmissions. The '02 and newer USDM WRX w/manual transmission uses a 3.90:1 front differential and a 3.545:1 rear differential with a stepped up output from the transmission to the rear diff to make the final drive ratios the same at 3.90:1.

The 4.11/4.44/3.90 is not related to the gearing inside the tranny (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th...)

so i could change my gear ratio from 4.11 to 4.44 by getting a blown tranny with the correct diff. ratio and just change the gears? if so, i'll definately have to store that info for later use |

That can be done but not easily. It's not easy to change the front diff out of the transmission. It's far easier to change the transmission.
If you can get your hands on a service manual, have lots of time and have internal knowledge of auto transmissions then go for it.

i've experimented taking my old one apart... difficult but do-able. i was just curious in case i ran across a burnt-out tranny with that ratio (might get it for peanuts)

The 4.44 ratio trans also differs in the first and second gear ratios.
All 4EATs have a 1 to 1.00 third gear ratio, as in direct drive, and all 4EATs have a fourth gear ratio of 1 to 0.694, as in overdrive. But, 4.44 4EATs have lower internal ratios, giving 36% more torque in first gear, and 31% more torque in second, as compared to a 3.545 ratio SVX trans. My spec sheets are at work now.
