Colder it gets harder to start.
When I start my car in temps below 40 it idles briefly and shuts off. I have to start it about six times when its really cold, wait for it to shut off, and then start it again. The colder it gets the more I have to turn it over.
Eventually, when it warms up, it runs perfect. |

Coolant Temp Sensor? Far stretch, but it might be possible. What you describe is opposite of what a failing CTS usually does, but the part about it only working when it warms up seems to be indicative of something having to do with the temperature of the engine.
Could also be a crank position sensor, but that one usually causes the problem to be consistent (not temp related).

Not that I really have any experience/qualification to answer this, but what about piston/cylinder wear? If the pistons aren't sealing well the cold might cause them to shrink enough that they don't maintain effective compression until the engine has warmed a little and the pistons have expanded. Just my thoughts.

Check: battery voltage, engine oil is not too thick, starter and connections between battery and starter.

I also recommend checking/replacing the CTS. When it does start do you get a normal high idle or does it idle at 600rpm right from cold? Mine did the latter when my sensor was failing.
