Auto replacement VS Manual swap
It seems inevitable, to say the least. I don't know when, but I'm going to have to change my transmission sometime in the near future. How much does a standard automatic transmission replacement go for? What does a full manual swap end up looking like price wise? Trying to allocate money from now.

the main reason I am not breaking my back to get an SVX is the auto...
forget costs.. go manual and never look back. (old subaru manuals are cheap and hard to break... Huck runs a 95 with a cable clutch in Frankenwedge... I hear it works fine) |

If I had the choice I would almost never choose an auto-tranny. Manual may be more work sometimes (rush hour stop and go stuff), but for the extra fun of shifting gears I would gladly put up with that.
Plus I appreciate anything that takes an added degree of skill to do well.

The SVX is the first automatic car I've ever had. It's not a case of which is preferable; I'll always pick manual. It's a question of whether or not it costs significantly more than a manual swap. The downtime is also a big factor.

It depends on what you can do yourself and where you get the parts.
I've replaced mine with a stock 3.545 tranny out of a junkyard for less than $100 including new seals and fluid. Getting a rebuilt from SOA is going to cost closer to $3000. Getting a 4.44 trans and matching diff from a yard with a warranty is probably closer $500-600. An auto swap at a shop is going to run ~$500 in labor For an MT swap, if your able to fab your own pedal box, linkage, drive shaft and cross member you can put in a 5 speed out of a early Legacy for under $1000. If you want it to be "bolt-up" you can get the kit from YT for about $1000, find a trans and spend a good weekend + putting it all together. If you plan to abuse it and want something more reliable you're looking at closer to $2000 to get a box out of a newer WRX. If you want it installed for you, check with YT but I think he gets ~$1000 for the swap.

Stock auto : ~$700 + $500 to install ~$1200 total 4.44 auto: ~$600 + $600 to install ~$1200 total Non-turbo 5mt: $1000 +$1000kit +$1000 to install ~$3000 Turbo 5mt: $2000 +$1000kit +$1000 to install ~$4000 These are rough prices and will vary depending on what parts you want to use and if you plan to do it yourself. Also, there are killer deals to be had, if you wait for the right prices to come around... but that is never a wait you want if you need it fast Tom |
