What was your first Subaru?

I found this photo of my first Subaru stuck in a book last night. Was a 1986 GL-10 Turbo I purchased new. Had the air suspension, orange read-out digital dash and white spoker wheels. Great beach car. Only problem I ever had was a busted timng belt at 40,000 miles. Traded it in in 1992 for a Legacy wagon. No SVX's in the showroom but I did take a brochure and told my wife I would own one some day.

Mine was an tan 85 GL Wagon, also had the orange digi dash, but no turbo or air ride like yours. I went through about five more wagons before I started piecing together my current fleet in 1999 when I bought my Legacy, then the SVX, then the Brat.

My parent's first Subbie was a silver 1990-ish Legacy that got unhappy if left in all wheel drive.

First

1981 GLF. It was a red FWD 5spd. These were Subarus idea of a sporty 2dr with trunk luggage rack. My favorite Subie prior to the SVXs was a 1986 Turbo XT GL10, FWD 5spd.

1986 Subaru GL wagon, bought new from Boomershine Subaru in Marietta, Ga. Five speed manual, dual-range AWD, white spoke wheels (like those in the first photo), AC, dealer-installed cruise, engine skid plate, flat-black roof rack, AM/FM radio. No fuel injection, no air ride, no power steering, no power locks nor windows. I think we paid $11,400.

[sniff... sniff] Man, I miss that car. Subaru should still make the thing. Bought it new and drove it hard for 200,000+ miles; sold in 2000, rusted and smoking but still haulin'. Never replaced the clutch, and not only did I learn to drive a stick in this car, but I taught my daughter years later.

We broke a timing belt around 40,000 miles also, but some time later SOA sent a letter stating that this was due to some manufacturing defect (I've forgotten what), and we ultimately got a rebate toward the cost of replacement.

I've only had two subarus, my first being a 1990 Legacy 4dr. sedan and my current SVX.
I do come from a family with plenty of Subaru ownership
My father had (1) 1983 Brat(red), (2) 1985 Brats(White and Blue), (1) 1989 Turbo Coupe (currently putting a lift kit on for his off-road pleasure) and currently has a 1998 Impreza RS
My mother has had a 1985 legacy, 1992 impreza, 1995 impreza outback and currently has a 2005 Baja
Oh yeah and my sister has a 1995 legacy

A 1991 Legacy wagon. had 140k when it came here. We ran it 22k, then it was KLOBBERED by a full sized Dodge van while parked.
I bought it back, hammered it out and used it for my first auto-X car!!

I still have it and it is in primer with a really loud exhaust system.

It is resting on the planet MRAF. I may press it back into service while the red Outback undergoes 'metamorphis' and becomes a real, live, turbo auto-X car.

As the owner of a working 85 XT, that pic hurt my heart!!!

Mine has 'CAT TRACKS' on it, but will fire right up w a booster pak! I even built it it's own carport last year cause the tarp 'chafed' the paint.

The only time my XT hits the street, it either has a 'dealer' tag or a tow dolly hooked on. The most I have driven it was at a 3 day show 2 years ago, or auto-X. I have too many cars to tag them all, so I only tag 4 in winter and 6 in summer. The other 38 have to sit. ( 9 Subi's, 2 tagged year round)
