Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

After nine years of sitting in my garage, my RX-8 wheels got some new tires and went on my Pearlie today!

I think those wheels look as good or better than any other I have seen on the SVX. Of course I might be prejudiced.

I have been driving it around town getting ready for a 1,000 mile trip next month. This is a US car so it is showing miles.

Got a new back seat, trunk carpet, speaker grill and rear marker bulb holder from the junk yard. Tomorrow may be a headliner, any tips for getting them out?

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Continued dash disassembly on my mission to replace the stereo and some other stuff along the way.
Today I pulled out the JDM instrument cluster and fitted a NZDM cluster to see what would happen.
It fits ok.
It's missing bulbs for 4WS and something in Japanese next to 4WS.
Also missing ABS bulb.

Tacho doesn't work at all.
Speedo seems to be accurate.

When Cruise is engaged the Eco light is lit up.

No big dramas.

Something odd though, the turn indicators didn't flash on the cluster and there was no clicking sound normally associated with the indicators flashing.

So, fitting a NZDM cluster into my JDM wasn't going to work.
I thought about disassembling the clusters and swapping the speedo over (I was trying to get a 260km speedo into my car so it looks a bit more like a NZ car.

Decided against that today (perhaps another day) and carried on with dash disassembly.

Got the air con controller out (Thanks Steve for the directions).
But can't find the repaired unit that Steve sent to me which is no good. No doubt it will show up eventually.

Managed to get the OEM stereo out, that was a mission. Eventually worked out that the left side of the cage had caught on the fabric trim and was pulling it away as I pulled the cage out. Eventually worked it out, got the cage out, glued the fabric back. I've got photos of these steps that I will post to show exactly what went wrong.

Cobbled together the adapter cable I bought from AE64 and connected up my Sony head unit, but it didn't work. By now it was getting dark, so stopped work. Will have another go next Sunday.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Shane,

the unit that I sent you was repaired after I fitted yours to mine (swapped over the front covers so that we could both be happy again).

The repair only took a couple of hours.

I double-boxed it when I sent it to you approx. 6 months ago?.

Hope you find it - if not I see there is a guy selling 3 SVXs for NZ$6k the lot on www.trademe.co.nz

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

3 SVX's for $NZ6000 on TradeMe ?
Way over priced.
Did you see 2 x SVX's for $NZ1500 on TradeMe ?

No, I won't be buying those either. Wife would shoot me.
Need to sell the one sitting in my shed to clear space. I was hoping to sell that and buy the 2 for $1500.

Anyway, what did I do to my SVX today ?
You'll see two posts down, that I pulled the dash apart.
This morning I did a 250km round trip to Tauranga with large sections of the dash missing. No dramas, most things worked ok.
I did discover that the indicators weren't working (nothing to do with the instrument cluster), this is caused by not connecting the double switch assembly to the left of the steering wheel which has the hazard light & rear window demister switches. Unplug this and the indicators stop working.

On my way home this evening (in the dark), a truck behind me flashed it's lights. I thought that strange, so pulled over for a road side car inspection and found my tail lights not working (100km from home, in the dark).

During the dash disassembly project I decided to swap my fuse cover from Japanese to English, but only got as far as removing the Japanese cover, leaving the English fuse cover on the floor of the garage.
I rang for help and was lucky that Ewie has nothing else to do with his evening but sit by the phone and wait for people like me to call and to patiently search for fuse cover layouts in the interwebs.

We found every single fuse we could find was intact. Even swapped out the fuse responsible for tail lights with another in case it had an invisible to the human eye crack in it, no luck.

So, possible against my better judgement and after confirming the brake lights worked I drove home. The great thing about living in New Zealand is that hardly anyone else lives here, so it's possible for drive for many miles without seeing another car.

I ducked along some rural roads to avoid the state highways (or what passes for a state highway in this part of the world, the Amuricans would probably call it a goat track) and finally arrived home safely. No injuries, damage or police infringement notices.

Arrived home and fitted the missing switch assembly (described above) which immediately solved the missing indicator problem, but still nothing from the tail lights. I'll look at that tomorrow. Good excuse to leave work early so I'm not driving home in the dark, until the weekend when I can go over this properly.

Big thanks to Ewie and thanks also to Daniel & Steve for replying to my messages for help.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Just figured out how to fix my fuel gauge. I'll see in the next few days if it really works. I don't know if anyone has tried this before with positive results. I will report back to tell if this was indeed a fix.

This was kind of a spontaneous job done in a moment of frustration with the car (those are actually more rare than you would expect!) so I didn't take the time for pictures. I will do one of the other ones soon and take plenty of pictures and write up a how-to.

Changed the oil in my other H4 engine... It just isn't in a Subaru.
