Re: 11:1 Engine Rebuild

Green . Lots of blue and black on the engine. I have big plans though. Paint will simply be last on the list. Engine, trans, Engine management, suspension, interior, and the finally new paint. In that order, more or less. There is a lot of work left ahead of me, but financially I would say I am about 30-40% of the way there. The engine has been the most expensive part so far, and I am hoping it stays that way.

The new paint will be a ming blue (or something similar and dark) with black roof, trunklid and spoiler.

Re: 11:1 Engine Rebuild

If anyone is itching to follow in Cameron's footsteps I have another set of these coated 11 to 1 pistons in stock so right now they are available without the extensive lead time it normally takes to get them made.

Re: 11:1 Engine Rebuild

Small update for anyone who cares .

Intake Manifold was looking pretty gross on the inside (powdercoating looks great on the outside but there was overspray inside the manifold and on the gasket surfaces). So, I drilled the EGR plugs out of the manifold, cleaned the pathway a bit, and am going to have the machine shop do the decks, sonic clean it, and then weld/press new plugs in for the EGR path. The only concern I have with this is if the prep work for the powdercoating is in anyway inferior, then it may lift up during the sonic cleaning. No big, though. Function comes first, pretty second. Glass beads (left from powdercoating) in the intake path, and ultimately combustion chambers, equals 7 grand in the trash...I think I can live with some possible peeled paint.

Also, got all my timing pulleys, idlers, and tensioner ordered, as well as 19 new lash adjusters from Subaru. Last ones SOA has...Mike Emery is going to try to locate me 5 used ones. I will simply send the used ones out to have rebuilt. Mizpah Manufacturing does this for 4 bucks a pop. Wish I knew that before I junked mine. You live and learn, right?

So, all the parts are going to be in friday, minus Mikes HVLA's. For the time being I am repainting the valve covers to better match my plastic parts in the engine bay.

Just doing the final prep for that last push to get it running.

By the way, I still need that picture that has the part numbers for the solenoids under the intake manifold. Anyone know which one I am talking about?

Re: 11:1 Engine Rebuild

Went to ballard this morning to pick up all my timing idlers, cogs, and tensioner. Along with a couple sensors and a duty solenoid for the intake manifold. Stopped by the machine shop in shoreline on the way down to pick up the intake manifold from cleaning. They did a cool set-up on the EGR path that will allow easy cleaning later. Looks like they pressed some threaded structure in there and then filled it with hex-drive fasteners. Pics when I get home. (Should be running by the end of the month).

Re: 11:1 Engine Rebuild

I ran out of silicone and didn't realize it when I was putting my oil pump on...crap. Well, got the RH cams in...still waiting on the last 5 lifters so I cannot put in the LH. And since I could not put the forward cam cap on (needs silicone) I did not want to turn the engine over and make a mess of oil on my floor. PICS.

Re: 11:1 Engine Rebuild

And here is my intake manifold stripped of components...thats on tomorrow's agenda in the morning, and then off to the auto store on the way to work to pick up some silicone...I still have to clean the inside of the valve covers (same problem as the intake manifold with a little overspray and grit/debris).

The fasteners were actually threaded directly into the intake manifold...I could have sworn I saw some sort of insert in there earlier, but I only had a second to inspect it this morning before work. The inside came clean enough, and the decks I had to clean some overspray off of.

As you probably noticed in the last pics, I decided not to paint the forward cam caps. This is because they would be a pain to mask, will not be very visible and I would not want the paint to cause an oil leak (or help one down the road). Really though, those are just excuses for me to be lazy

Re: 11:1 Engine Rebuild

So I got my driver side exhaust cam installed last night, and am still waiting on those lash adjusters which should be here friday. So the driver side will be all buttoned up friday night, along with all the timing components.

This morning, to keep things moving, I started assembling the intake manifold. The configuration of ports on mine seems to be different from any of the can pics I can find, and I sold my old intake manifold (which is different from my current on as well, and the same as everyone elses it would seem). I am thinking it is from a later model car. The only difference is the addition of one vacuum port on either side of the manifold, close to centerline, and on the aft side of the IRIS valve. I simply ran some line to connect them, since it can't be that important if my old one did not have it. I figure the small line will not allow much air transfer from either side of the manifold, so I should not even notice that it's there. Anyone know which ports I am talking about? If so, where do they go?...

I will post pics tonight. This thing is getting close.....

Glad to see your project progressing as well! I bet you can't wait to fire that thing up. Should be a blast with 11:1.

Re: 11:1 Engine Rebuild

Long Block Complete!

All I am waiting on is a new coolant crossover pipe (well, used...but new to me) and my engine harness to arrive at the dealer from new jersey. Hoping to have her fired up saturday or sunday of next week. I have to say this is one of my favorite projects to date. I would like to thank everyone that gave technical insight, advice, and all the people that helped provide parts.

In no particular order (and I may have forgotten some) I would like to give a BIG THANKS to

Mike (Longassname)
Tom (SVXfiles)
Tom (TomsSVX)
Mike (Mike621)
Boxersix
SVXRide
NeedForSpeed

And to anyone else that helped me out in any way, thank you.

A few more pics as the end of the project nears.
