Re: 4.44 , 4.11 or stock ? and why ?
thank you for the info that is quite interesting, so you say 4.11 have issues , is it because it doesn't like svx ? or simply because they were used ?

Every 4.11, or 4.44 for that matter, has fewer F/R clutches than an SVX. Every stock, 3.545 SVX 4EAT has a program to soften the hard shifts. And every 4.44, or 4.11 that I have installed has been used. This is because we are all on some kind of budget, usually. If you install two equally worn used transmissions, and one has the advantage of steeper gearing, the one that has the mechanical advantage of lower gearing will move the object easier. Once an object is moving it is much easier to continue the movement. Most of the heat, and wear in our transmissions come from the starting of the movemet.

Re: 4.44 , 4.11 or stock ? and why ?
4.44 is best for reliability, but I really miss my stock gearing.
Maybe if I put the 4.44's in my project car I would happier. But right now its in my baby (my '95) and I dont like the high rpms of highway cruising. I'll probably go back to stock in a year or two. The 4.44 deffinetly is fun, the 4.11 I dont have experience with yet because my pearly is still being worked on. But I've been hearing more and more that they dont last long either. Dustin

Re: 4.44 , 4.11 or stock ? and why ?
This is confusing for me, and maybe others, because we all hear of the dreaded "transmission FAILURE!" and everyone seems to agree that stock is prone to early failure. however, as stated, 4.11's don't seem to last that much longer, and 4.44's although stronger make for a higher rpm. So I guess what I'm wondering is, does a tranny cooler fix the majority of the ailment for both stock and 4.11 or does this just mean other issues to be dealt with at another time?

Re: 4.44 , 4.11 or stock ? and why ?
Level 10 rebuild. It gets pricey though, and you'd probably only want to spend the money if you were going to drive the car till the day rust takes it's life or a nuclear halocaust greets us some random morning.

Re: 4.44 , 4.11 or stock ? and why ?
Quote:
4.11: were not built to handle our heavy SVX. They have far less clutch packs, so they fail prematurely. The difference in final gearing does not make up for their lack of clutch packs. 4.44: were built for towing, they have less clutch packs than a stock tranny but the final gearing gives them more leverage and so they generate far less heat. Dustin Ps. I say "properly rebult" because the consensus is that most stock rebuilt transmissions did not have every worn/damaged part replaced and so they fail VERY quickly.

Re: 4.44 , 4.11 or stock ? and why ?
If one were to be able to source a 4.11 WRX tranny, would that make up for it, you think? I am told that the turbo trannies had extra clutches and could hold more power. Would you agree?

The WRX uses the newer Phase II trans which will not work with our TCU

Why does everyone insist on calling it MAD JDM? lol But yes, it is a phase 1 WRX tranny taken from a '93 JDM WRX wagon. Has just a tick over 60,000 miles on it. I had assumed that having the extra clutches would offset the loss of life compared to other 4.11's that I often hear complaints of. So, odepaj, I'm just curious what you think of that, that's all. I'm surprised more people don't try to get ahold of them if they can indeed perform better than the USDM 4.11's.

If it uses the same "ACT-4" gear as a USDM trans it should be fine. If its like the VTD JDM trans then you'll have problems. Does anybody know if the VTD trans is listed as a "4EAT"? Or is it specified as "VTD"? Dustin

Re: 4.44 , 4.11 or stock ? and why ?
Now I'm worried, how would one specifically tell the trans was going out. I bought a used one, Subaru reman though. It seems fine, however sometimes it feels like the tranny kicks in after the gas is laid down. Which makes me think the earliest signs of slipping. however it could just be the way its engaging, or something else. Idk, I'll have to look into it more, maybe drop the pan and see if anythings floating, or have a fluid transfer done to get some fresh lube in there.
I'll report my findings, hopefully my newly acquired tranny isn't already on it's way out. ***apologies for the thread hi-jack there....***
