Re: 11:1 Engine Rebuild
Did some cleaning today on the throttle body, and primed and painted the airbox, alternator belt cover, and intake cover (not the whole thing as I am replacing part of it). All painted parts will be blue, which should look pretty sleek since my pulleys, intake collector, and brackets will be powder coated black.
Also cleaned my crossmember. Man, that thing was incredibly dirty. Talk about caked on. Once I get my girlfriends camera all figured out I shall post pictures |

Re: 11:1 Engine Rebuild
ok, heres the last of those pics i took today. You can see the different painted parts. Also, you can tell how hot these engines can get by the color of the inside of the block. That oil has really been burnt on there. Nothing a good chemical wash cannot fix though

Re: 11:1 Engine Rebuild
Looks like you got a newish crank pulley there--nice.
I woiuld recomend making a point of babying that crank while your engine is taken apart. Unlike a cast crank it can get bent laying around the shop. Making a crate for it would be fantastic otherwise keep it sitting in one of the block halves with the old bearings. You can get your parts cleaner with brushes then getting them hot tanked will do for you. You'll find a gallon bottle of formula 44 or royal purple and a scrub brush and a parts cleaner brush will get your block cleaner than anything else. Immediately blow the water off with an air gun and spray/wipe your cylinder walls with wd40 or they will rust. You'll want to go ahead and clean your deck and gasket flanges now too. The best thing to use is surfacing pads on a die grinder. That's basically a scotch brite disc that goes on a rotary tool--usually a die grinder but you could use a drill if you had to. After you get your machine work done you'll repeat the washing with soapy water, blow it dry and blow out the oil passages, and wipe the cylinders down with wd40 again. |

Re: 11:1 Engine Rebuild
As always LAN,
Your advice is very much appreciated. I am the only person that goes into the garage, and pointed out to my girlfriend what the crank was, and not to go within 10 feet of it . I bet that dremel I bought on friday is gonna come in handy soon. Hopefully I can find the time to clean my block this week before it goes to the machine shop. |

Follow LAN's advice here, re the tools to use. You'll eat up your dremel if you try to use it on this. -Bill

Re: 11:1 Engine Rebuild
Ah, i have generally heard those referred to as a Dotco. Just a common brand used at my place of employment. I am personally a fan of IR. That is a nice Die Grinder you have there. Looks like a need a compressor. Good excuse to buy one, if you ask me.

Re: 11:1 Engine Rebuild
I agree completely. How much does an IR die grinder like that cost ya? I live in the seattle area so maybe I will just deal with them directly.

As far as I know it is from the factory. But who knows. Either way, It is definately not needing replacement |

Re: 11:1 Engine Rebuild
I'm not sure, it belongs to a tech at work. One piece of advice for die grinders though, try to get one with an insulated handle (either plastic or rubber). The air going through makes the metal ones go ice cold after 30 seconds or so. They can become somewhat painful to hold.
