I used to have a wood stove. Looked kinda like this:

Only it was older. One cord of wood for $200~ would last an entire season.

Outside boilers are getting more common here at present. They suit the storage and loading arrangements for the wood chips or pellets.
[Blown into storage bin off a truck, augered into the stove using a control system and completely automatic.]

The main trick is to hyper-insulate the burner and the water pipes to the house so that no heat is lost un-necessarily.

One possible snag with my system is when power goes. As it has a boiler and circulation pump, power goes, circulation goes!

We have a propane fire in the other room, so we are far from snookered. Heat output from the stove is so high, we have to use water to distribute it and get full use from it.

[I'm also interested to see how many barrow loads it takes. Do you use the potash in the garden?]

I put some of it on the garden. The rest is spread on the ice to help speed the melt and keep cars from sliding into the side of the house.

Well, How did we do this year?? I burned less than 400# of propane and hauled 9 GMC loads of wood, (all free for the hauling). I have enough wood left to get me through till dec 08.

I got the call from the lumber yard. My 6 new windows came in yesterday.
They go upstairs. I have only replaced 4 so far.
There are 19 windows in this ol' shack. I only heat 6 rooms all the time and 2 rooms when I want to use that part of the house. The rest of the shack gets used in the warmer months.
I hope to get the propane down to less than 300# per year and the wood to less than 6 loads!
The house was warmer this year than EVER before!

weve been using a wood burning stove for heat for the past 9 years now. we used to have a nice wood burner in kansas, got free wood from people clearing land. here in CO we have an alright woodburner, dont get free wood anymore, but we have a pole barn FULL of wood, i could easily park probably 2 cars in that pole barn. well, its about half gone now from this winter. wood out here is cheap though, its like 20 bucks for a permit to get a cord, and we still havent gotten our tickets punched. out here when they see you leave with a cord they will punch one of your tickets, since noone is there they never punch them. for our huge bonfires we have all the time the house wood is off limits, we go driving down the rode and all over the side is wood rotting away, just hop out with about 5 guys and you have a big truck load in less than half an hour. too bad a truck load only lasts us about half the night haha. wood burning is definitely the way to go nowadays with everything climbing in prices. there is so much dead wood everywhere that is just going to waste, rotting and inevitably out here potential kindeling for a forest fire.

I have an Ashley wood stove in my basement. This sort looks like a pot belly stove and it does well at providing heat when I use it. It has an automatic air intake that works off a bi-metallic spring to keep the room temperature constant.

The wood I use is dried for a year and I keep it in a shed so that it stays dry. Burning wet wood wastes a lot of heat.

Ah well this year I have been burning my old oil filters. Yup. I have been taken off the o-ring and placing the drained oil filter upside down in the stove. This has been working okay. I think I get a lot of heat out of the filters. The oil heats up and vaporizes and then a flame comes off the upside of the filter. It’s best to keep the door to the stove closed as it can get a little smelly, best to keep a vacuum in the stove to keep the burning gases inside it too. I have looked a few times and the flame looks to be burning very clean as there is no black smoke visible.

Look into this website http://www.builditsolar.com/ they have a ton of do it yourself projects for energy savings. I plan on a water catchment system, solar panel, greenhouse and solar panels to offset some of the ridiculous energy costs coming in the near future.

That's good going Jerry!

We bought only one load of timber this year, and right now we have used up 2/3rds of it. My plan is to have pre-dried timber, but my shed is not built yet, so I can't buy in advance like I would prefer to do.

I can say that timber works very well for us, and the stove delivers a lot of heat around the house. The next move to renewable energy will be solar panels heating the water later this year. My medium term plan is to stop using oil altogether within the next two years or so.

Jerry, here is a photo of my Mum relaxing at the fire from last Sunday. She has had the stitches removed from her eye surgery during the week, and as you can see, she is good to go for reading etc.

The stove is "inset", that is to say not free standing, but recessed back into the fireplace. It looks slim and neat in the photo, but when you open the doors you can get in a 15" log into the firebox.

It is very economical to run, yet give out loads of heat. It is a real success with us, we love it.

Joe

Looks very comfy!! I'm glad for her!!

My neighbor has a similar insert sitting in his back yard. I tried to buy it 2 years ago, but he put it next to his fence so he could burn wood in it when he has a party. I have seen a lot of parties there, but the only fire is in one of those steel rings on legs, no where NEAR the unit I lust after!

I have an old fireplace that is good only for 'atmosphere', since the only heat generated is from dragging wood to it!

Full Circle!!

I have been 'disposing' of the scraps for a contractor for the last 5 years. He could drop off wood that he would have had to pay to get rid of for several years now and I cut it up and burned it.
WELL, He bought a piece of ground that had 33 trees that he needed rid of, so he thought of ME!!

I burned up 2 gallons of high test in the husky and sharpened the chain after every three loads.

With the help of some strong backs, (my 'disability' did not stop me from running the saw), there is about 5 cords of wood piled at my garage door(s)!!!

My lovely bride was there loading for 4 days! Today, OT got up before breakfast and loaded a couple trucks! (he is NOT a 'morning' person)

My daughter recieved a few loads, my brother got some and my buddy Tuck will be cleaning up the scraps!!

We will all be burning this 'bounty' in the fall!

At 7:45 AM, Jerry calls me.

Did you guys know there was a 7:45, IN THE MORNING?!?!?!

Jerry says "Please come over and carry 6000#s of tree trunks onto, AND OFF OF my truck.

It's 43F outside and hailing a little bit, the neighborhood is Pitt Bull friendly, , and, of course, I am in a hurry to get this done, so I can go to my REAL job!"

Sooo, we now have a NEW quote that I am sure will come up again.

The quiote is

"I am not a morning person you !@#$%^&*!!!

Time to bring this link back!! I just got rid of all the paper that was thrown next to it! I went outside and picked a few choice pieces of kindling and bent a piece of foil to the shape of a tray and dropped a couple burgers on it! The room smells GREAT!! Half the fun of a wood stove is cooking IN when it's too cold to cook out!!

I have an appointment to whack down 2 trees at 9:00 am saturday.
Since I have more wood than I can BURN this winter, I asked my brother to stop buy and collect it!

Here's the deal. I cut the trees, collect the money and give the wood away!!

I could haul the wood home, but I have NO WHERE to PUT it!!

I have 3 1/2 cords cut, split and stacked. I have another cord stacked that needs split. I have given away 5 cords to family members and have another 10 cords that I can cut and haul from local sites!

Last year, I burned 2 1/2 cords and 300 lbs propane. I have 300 lbs propane and 2 extra cords on site!!

In addition, I replaced 6 more windows this year.

I have taken steps to assure that the high cost of oil/greed will NOT sink my boat!

I HOPE that you guys have done the same.....

(HUSQVARNA and GMC for hire!!) People will PAY you to haul away HEAT!!!

What a CONCEPT!!
