Re: Knock sensor, maf, cylinder?
Not wanting to hijack this thread but! What problems does the EGR valve and the knock sensor cause the engine. Right now I get both the codes, the car runs like new, very smooth , good idle , great MPG . But dreaded CEL . Also passes emissions . 1994

Re: Knock sensor, maf, cylinder?
If I remember correctly, the connector was easier to release from underneath. Having an OBD-1 car, you only have one O2 sensor per bank. If you jack up the car, it will be visible on the pass side pipe(I think that's the #2 sensor). Just follow the lead to the connector. You can try cleaning it. You can source an OEM NTK replacement from places like Rock Auto. The part # is NTK 24614. They should be around $37.79.

These are some replacement O2 sensors that have been recommended by more knowledgeable members in the past. Just replace it, cleaning would be prohibitively difficult and unlikely to succeed.

Re: Knock sensor, maf, cylinder?
thanks. ill order a sensor and see if i can find a ramp. Am I to understand that this sensor measures oxygen level in the exhaust and is stuck into an exhaust pipe?

Re: Knock sensor, maf, cylinder?
That's right. There are two, one on each side, before the pre-cats, on the pipe after the headers. You may want to consider changing the other one while you're there.
One of these tools might come in handy: http://www.harborfreight.com/7-8-eig...ket-95045.html

Re: Knock sensor, maf, cylinder?
Yes i will do both, of course. I am also considering buying other sensors. They weigh so little i might as well get them while paying for the shipping. Any suggestions as to which are fairly cheap and probably due for replacement anyway? Im starting to see 100k miles.

Re: Knock sensor, maf, cylinder?
Specifically where are the connectors for the sensors? The "ECU" side, not the probe itself. Thanks!

Re: Knock sensor, maf, cylinder?
Just because you get an O2 sensor code does not necessarily mean it is bad. I recently had the same code and it was actually a bad coil on that side. The O2 sensor was reading a bad mix.
You can find 'How to documents' on changing the O2 sensors. You can also try switching the two O2 sensors after clearing the codes and see if it comes back. That will tell you if the O2 sensor is bad or something else causing it to throw the code. Good luck!

Re: Knock sensor, maf, cylinder?
Kwren, I intended just to check the connection prior to lifting the car.
Yes, swapping the two sensors would be good troubleshooting. I actually sensed something was wrong before the check egnine light briefly came on. In short, the RPMs are a little higher than they used to be. Seems like the engine must work a bit harder to yield the same effect as earlier. This was kind of a day/night thing so I first suspected non-firing cylinder or something. The only code I get is left O2 sensor but that sort of figures because if it is indeed broken, then the mixture might not be optimal anymore.

Re: Knock sensor, maf, cylinder?
But... The 02 code does not necessary mean that there is a problem with the 02 sensor. With high miles on the car, I personally would change them both anyway. The easiest way... Raise the hood and Disconnect the wiring to them both, if possible... "up" from sensors follow the wiring to the "quick disconnects... Slip a "big old box end wrench" over the wiring and slide the wrench all the way to the 02 sensor. They can be stubborn with a socket but you can easily win the battle with that "big old box end wrench". This way is much easier and better than using a socket.
