How to replace small speedo gear
Well installed a new trans in the svx last week and the speedo doesn't work. Found out the small gear is missing teeth seen here.
First you need to remove the wheel and the axle nut. Then unbolt the ball joint from the hub which is 14mm on both sides of the bolt. After that punch out the roll pin from the axle and side it over to the left, undo the 14mm bolt locking in the axle plate and spin the circle plate out. Now would be a good time to replace the axle seal if yours is bad. Then you can inspect your gear and worm gear. If your worm gear is ok then you can be relieved because that one needs the bearing pressed off to replaced. If the small one is damaged take a flathead screwdriver and pry the snap ring off as you wont need it any more because it is IMPOSSIBLE to get back on doing it this way. So since you cannot get a snap ring back in there I used an E clip instead slightly modified. All I did was get a size smaller than the snap-ring and used a dremmel with a tapered cone end and enlarged it to fit the cone diameter/ground the outside edge slightly. Took pictures after it was installed so I borked that shot. After that put everything back together and take it for a spin and hopefully your speedometer/odometer works again.
