LSD Additive Help
I've read a number of prior posts on this but I can't find specifics.
What is the brand name of this stuff/ Where can I buy it? How much should be added? There seems to be enough success stories on this that I want to try it. Thanks for your help. Curt |

GM Dealers sell it, Kendall makes a version....basically you're going to ask for limited slip differential additive - if it comes in a 4 ounce bottle and smeels incredibly bad - you found the right stuff.
Are you talking about putting this in a tranny to stop binding? It has been reported as a success story, but I personally don't like recommending additives - especially one designed to be used elsewhere. Why not try a switch to a "slicker" ATF - like maybe Mobil 1. |

Thanks for your input.
Are there "tried-and-true" experiences with Mobil 1 tranny fluid making the clunk go away? That sounds like a better idea than additives but if it's not a clunk-corrector I'll still have a problem. The tranny was just rebuilt - actually it's still in the shop because of the clunking. I have heard that some additives can actually make the tranny slip so I'm not keen on additives either but the clunk must go. Curt |

Transmission Clunk
Hi Curt, The clunking might be the transmission mount. The rubber part goes south with age and gives a variety of symptoms, one of which is a clunking. Take care, BOBB

Thanks BOBB
The clunking is not present with the FWD fuse installed. With the fuse out, the clunking is only around corners. Any and all suggestions are welcome! |

The binding you're experiencing is not from the rear limited-slip diff not functioning properly, but from the transfer clutch at the back of the transmission 'sticking' when you drive around in a tight circle. Before adding any limited-slip additive to the transmission ATF, you should: 1) Drain (not flush) your current ATF and replace with new. Make sure the trans is filled to the correct level (need to have the engine running and ATF circulating through the trans). 2) Check your tire pressures Front & Rear and make sure they're within spec. The front tires should be approx 3-4 psi higher than the rear tires (i.e. fronts 32psi, rear 29psi). I personally run 40psi front and 36psi rear with no binding issues. Only after doing these two steps, should you add any limited slip additive...(small quantities at a time - if you add to much, you may start experiencing flaring during shifts) -Chike

Thanks Chike,
The car is still at the tranny shop and this problem started after a rebuild. It should be - better be - new tranny fluid. I'll see that they check the tire pressure. I had fantasies of a right pedal to stab. |

Finally, did you ever try the "officially" recommend test, drive in several tight figure 8s |

Thanks lee,
There's so much clunking just turning right or left 90 degree corners that I'd be afraid something would break doing tight figure eights. I'll check to see what type fluid they used. Will the figure 8's wear something in? |

the figure 8 is supposed to break in the clutches on the AWD section.
maybe this thread will help: http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=23074 Do a search using some terms like figure or binding, etc and read a few and see if anything seems like it will help is about all I can say. Its just my opinion, but putting in LSD additive is a cover-up of a problem and cover-ups are not generally a good thing for longevity. |

Have the shop check out your Throttle Position Sensor (T.P.S.) voltage.
If it's higher than the recomended 0.50Volts, that can cause binding. Do your tires match? Are all four the same size, brand, type? For example, if you have four Goodyear Eagle 225/50/16s, but the fronts are TR's, and the back are GT2's, they might not have the same circumferance, causing a binding. Even if they are all the same brand, do they all have the same circumferance? (Aprox 79 inches on the stock size.) Does the power light blink 16 times in a row when you start it?

Thanks guys for all the help!
I have only had the car about six weeks and I can't remember that the power light blinks at all when starting. It does comes on when I stab the right pedal though. What does 16 blinks indicate? What does something other than 16 blinks mean? All the tires match and have less than 5k miles on them. If the TPS is not less that .5 volts is there an adjustment or does it need replacing? I know little about the car and apparently the tranny shop doesn't either. They knew it was a 4EAT without looking it up so I gave them credit - maybe un-due. I'll probably pick it up tonight and try the figure eights to see if that helps remove the clunking. |

The TPS is held in with 2 screws. There are notches that allow you to rotate/adjust the TPS approx 20° total.
