Opinions on Amsoil
I am currently using amsoil oil and oil filters on both my svx's. Reason i switched to amsoil is that i've heard nothing but terrific things about their products. Even though it is synthetic i still change the oil every 3k miles. Anyone here using this product? Opinions? Thanks, chris

Personally, I've used nothing but Castrol GT in my cars since 1984. Am I convinced that the extra money is worth the Castrol brand. No, not really. But, I drive my cars 'til the wheels go square, and my SVX, which I've driven almost daily (save the stints in the tranny shop) since August '98, and continue to drive daily, is getting ready to click over to 270K and still runs like a striped a$$ed ape. So, if that's any testiment...

i far as I'm concerned, and this is the general consensus of the industry, oil is oil is oil is oil. just change it at 3000 and you will be fine.

Amsoil has performed well in independent tests in the past, and I've never had any issues with it in any performance cars I've owned. But in a stock SVX, I don't think the performance justifies the cost.

I haven't tried amsoil in my svx yet, but i have it in my jeep. Try the power foam you will like that. My truck would stall all the time, so i used the foam in it to try it out, and now it nevers stalls.

Yeah i dunno either, i mean i can honestly say that i haven't noticed a difference from the standard oil to switching to synthetic. If nothing else it gives me piece of mind that i am using an alleged superior product. Also is the amsoil filter any better than the stock?

They say the filter is good for 25 thousand miles. May friend is a dealer and he was running it his truck and after 25,000 miles it was still clean. So thats why im using it now.

Amsoil and Royal Purple are my oils of choice. It'll be Amsoil for the next several oil changes because I bought a case (16 quarts) at a discounted price.

I change the oil every 3,000 miles as well as the filter. If you don't change the filter, don't bother changing the oil in my opinion. I use Super Tech and stay with the same oil. I don't like changing brands of oil, so I stay with the same in all of my cars. I have heard that you should stay with the same kind of oil and not change, but I don't know if it really matters.

Oh, I also do an engine flush every other oil change. Dump in stuff, idle for 5-10 minutes, change oil. I find it has a noticable effect on how clean the new oil is after the first run, there's much less left over old oil.

All my Porsche 911's, my customers Porsche 911's, and most of my work vehicles use either a synthetic from either Amsoil or Swepco. The Porsche 911's get an oil service every year or every 15K miles and aside from the super high mileage cars(~250K+ is common on older Porsches) the oil comes out just as clean as it would at 3K miles.
The reason I use one of those fluids listed above vs a non-synthetic are their superb anti foam agents and high thermal breakdown capabilities when used in extreme conditions(Ie track/endurance racing or high load like towing). I like the Amsoil stuff. My work trucks have their synthetic automatic transmission fluids as well. -Adam |

I'd use a synthetic in an application like in the tranny, or rear end/diff, something that's going to be in there for 30,000 miles, but I don't see the sense in paying $8 a quart for something you're going to dump out in 3,000 miles. Maybe if I did the 15,000 mile oil change thing, I would, but I think unless you run it all the time and have a really clean motor, it's going to be just as dirty after 5,000 miles as the $2 a quart dino oil. Now if I had a race car, with a built up motor, where I was running in extreme conditions, yeah, I'd go with the synthetic. Same if I lived where it got really hot or really cold, but around here, for my daily driver, I just use a good quality dino oil.
I do think it's worth the money in parts of the car like the transmission that the oil is in there for 30k or more, and I'll pay a few more dollars a quart for ATF if it'll make my transmission last longer, but I'm not convinced that doubling or tripling the cost of an oil change is worth it...

I have always been a sceptic on the basis of doubt concerning advertising hot air, brand name, and resultant price, verses quality. In respect of oil experience many years ago confirms suspicion.
Some fifty years ago on an absolutely tight budget, I raced a sports car which was retro fitted with a good old flat head Ford V8. No oil cooling was incorporated and at the end of a race the dip stick did not register until things cooled down. The poor old mill was very, very hard pressed but hung in there. Because of lack of funds I used the cheapest oil available, i.e. reclaimed oil at half normal price. However the old chemist who ran the very basic refinery set up, added to the brew, at slightly extra cost, colloidal graphite. This was a fine graphite powder which remained in suspension under all circumstances. Many of the cities taxis used this same brew and I am sure that it was something else. In those days full flow filters were not common and I was never able to ascertain whether the graphite would pass a filter without a problem. Whatever, the small plant shut down and that was that. I know that organisations running large fleets of vehicles, used the same sort of plant to recycle oil with success. Does anyone know if this is still occurring?

Super Tech is so cheap to be believed for me of its protection to the engines. (but I think they shld do the work for regular use) I have not used it on my SVX but other cars yes...but I added lucas product to increase its performance to make me feel better

I use only valvoline maxlife in my SVX.
I had bought a corolla at one point that had an oil leak when purchased, I used valvoline maxlife in it, and no more oil leak! I kept the car for 3 years after that and never had a problem. So now ALL of my cars get Valvoline. I have heard good things about amsoil as well, but never used it.
