Foolish notions of easy PCV valve removal...
In an attempt to boost my atrocious 11 mpg fuel economy (and my SVX is 2wd even...) I thought I'd change the PCV valve the other night. Having read some of the horror stories here, I thought, "Surely it can't be THAT bad!" After all, the PCV valve's easy to see and reach under the intake manifold cover and not that hard to get a box wrench on.
Well, after splitting the brittle PCV hose while trying to get it off, and breaking off the head of my 19mm box wrench trying to bend it into an approximation of the special tool detailed in other posts, I gave up and loosened the bolts holding on the top part of the intake manifold so I could tilt it up and access the PCV and the broken hose. As you can imagine, that led to more brittle hoses and delicate nipples breaking, but I DID get a socket on the PCV valve. Turned out it was partially seized, so there's no way I could have gotten enough leverage to loosen it from the top anyway. So now a $5 and 15 minute job has turned into a $50+ and 5-hour job including replacing most or all of my vacuum hoses plus re-nippling several small components (thank heaven for JB weld!) Why did I think things would be any different for me? |

Re: Foolish notions of easy PCV valve removal...
11mpg? That's what I get around town in my XJR. I'd be running a couple bottles of fuel injector cleaner through with a 1/8 of a tank of gas as it almost seems to me to be that bad you've got an injector just dumping gas in that isn't getting burned.

Re: Foolish notions of easy PCV valve removal...
Yeah, 11mpg is a huge fueling issue not caused by a vacuum leak of any sort. That's either clogged cats, stuck open injector or a fuel leak going on.

Re: Foolish notions of easy PCV valve removal...
Why can't you remove it? broken, stripped, or can't get at it? An easy out can be an option but of course requires removal of some major stuff, another option is to split it with a chisel but that has some issues with keeping track of any broken bits.

Re: Foolish notions of easy PCV valve removal...
Can you just pull the throttle bodies off and use a socket.
Harvey.

its quite easy to get at with the throttle bodies off. plus you can clean the iac, and adjust the tps while your playing around there.

Re: Foolish notions of easy PCV valve removal...
Probably he just means that it's seized enough that he can't remove it from the top with a crows foot.
I'm with Harvey, that seems like the next best option.

Re: Foolish notions of easy PCV valve removal...
I always find this as a funny advertising statement..NOx) up to 17%. Restores power and performance. Reduces the need for costly higher octane fuel. (API)
So around here 93is going for 12 cents a gallon over 87. Now if I add $11.00 of this product to my 20 gallon tank and fill up with 12 cent cheaper gas. I save $5.00 on the fill up. And it only cost me $11.00 to do it. Ok so it might be worth $6.00 in its cleaning and performance gains.
