replacing water tempgauge
I've been thinking about this for a while and was wondering if I removed the stock temp from the gauge cluster could I use the leads from that to put in something like this in its place? http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku I ask because since the stock is all electrical do I need to but a sending unit also or can I just use the stock one?

Re: replacing water tempgauge
While you're at it...
I'd been thinking that the two little status thingies (top left and right on the panel) are basically useless and would serve much better as functional gauges (trans temp and voltage maybe). Do you know if there's anything behind the panel there that would strongly object to having a hole cut in it?

Re: replacing water tempgauge
Last time I had mine out there were just sockets for lights. I too was thinking of adding another gauge there if I can fit the water gauge in there, but I might have to cut some of the plastic shield also unless I can dremel enough from the cluster.

Re: replacing water tempgauge
there was a post a few years ago on this, the guy replaced both lower gauges with aftermarkets, can't remember if he put in gauges where the lights are, and I couldn't find the post on a search.
the gauges he put in did not require a mod to the housing. thought he used stock sensors. anyone have a link to that thread ??

Re: replacing water tempgauge
The dash coolant sender is the single pin sensor on the crossover. It can be removed and replaced with a new sender for the digital gauge with no ill effects on the car's performance or ability to monitor the temp. BUT you cannot remove the two pin sensor next to it.

Re: replacing water tempgauge
Tom got any pics of the sensors so I have a visual idea?

Re: replacing water tempgauge
I don't, take a look at the back driver's side of the engine. Under the manifold in the back corner you will see a single spade connector plugged into a small sensor and then a brown/red connector w/ two wires plugged into the other sensor. They are right next to eachother on the corner of the coolant X-over pipe

3 posts down you'll find a pic of my trans temp gauge, I had no problems hacking up the cluster. |

Re: replacing water tempgauge
The more recent gauges that were placed in a cluster were VERY small, and mechanical (and not mine, for clarity):
I'd find it hard to believe that any gauge replacement wouldn't require at least some modification to the cluster. I placed a pair of ISSPROs in my cluster (currently out, being converted to RED ) both on the left side, and I cut an immense amount of plastic out of it to get them to fit, not to mention doing some substantial altering and removal of parts of the circuit sheet behind it. Is gonna look like this:

Re: replacing water tempgauge
Thanks for the pics. This gives me an idea so far on what needs to be done. Are those gauges 2 1/16, and what is the hieght on them? I ordered a tranny temp gauge first and got a extra cluster coming so i'll post how it goes. I want to get at least the tranny gauge put above the coolant temp for now then if it all fits nice then i'm getting the coolant gauge.
