Vband on green wheels? No those are the drive cogs(gears) that index the rollers and maintain their position in relation to each other. The vband connections are the large blue plates in those photos. One connects to the plenum, the other to the charge piping from the intercooler.

Re: Individual Throttle Bodies and Improved Airflow

the teeth on the gears must be small, am I correct to assume the intake diameter was 100mm. The challange I face is to get the centre throttle in the small space avaible, 112mm between intakes.
You plans have given me plenty of food for thought. One hell of a job I bit off.

Re: Individual Throttle Bodies and Improved Airflow

Diametral pitch was 20 on the gears. Gear teeth were not shown on that particular CAD to save on computing power for the graphics card at the time. Fine gear teeth and thread pitch suck up alot of computer memory during the render, and My PC is currently sub par for SW2010.

TB bore was 100MM at the backside(inlet to plenum), I forget the actual TB inlet diameter but it was 1.2% taper per inch larger than the final OD, or something right around there. It was all factored in for that particular RB26 motor and the plenum I also build for it as well.

Re: Individual Throttle Bodies and Improved Airflow

Have a look at this setup on the BMW V10, what surprised me is how large the ram pipes are and how small the port is into the head may be its to increase the air flow speed at both high and low revs.

Re: Individual Throttle Bodies and Improved Airflow

Here is the final design of the individual throttle bodies. Had to build an adapter plate the bolt the 3 to the head. Also real short of room so I can't use gears like Adam instead I will use linkages. This will also offer the advantage that I can do test runs with the throttles going in the different direction to normal. Any way here is the 3d PDF.
Have a great day.

Re: Individual Throttle Bodies and Improved Airflow

I am not sure if anyones alive out there you guys are all pretty quite.

I have milled the first throttle body and have partly milled a further 6, been going like a stuck cat to get all my jobs done but they are looking good. I will post a couple of photos of the job as I go. I plan to redisgn the top cooling pipe and small bypass pipes while I am at it. The aim being to move the thermostate up to the back of the engine at the top and use a stat that when it opens it close off the coolant going through the smaller pipes direct to the pump inlet. The rason being is that under higher temps I want all coolant to go through the radiator.
Right now the adapter plate for ITB hit the two small pipes on the side of the heads.

The big ticket challange I still need to work through is were to put the injectors. With the twin roller design of these throttles there is not enough room to go under the roller with the injector so I will have to go above. This means I can either put them on the bend of the ram pipe or injecting into the ram pipe mouth. Either way I still have a few challanges to go there.

Looked at the head and it should be possiable to mill into the ports part of the way using the CNC, my machine is only a 3 axis so I will need to tilt the engine head to get the right angle. This may mean building a jig to hold everything in place.

Anyway have a great day.
Tony

Hey Tony,

Congrats on aquiring a cnc mill. What do you have there? Was it ready to go or did you redo the control?

Re: Individual Throttle Bodies and Improved Airflow

Hi Mike, these are going on the race engine you built for me, should look good.

I am trying to get my head around were to get the air from, Matt just fitted socks to his ram pipes and got the air from the engine bay. I want to get it from the outside, under most race rules we are not allowed to cut a scoop in the bonnet. That leaves me with,
Front above radiator (my prefered)
Or back of bonnet at the base of the windscreen.

My prefered option is front of bonnet, the reason is that I am going to change to a cross flow radiator, meaning side tanks with the cap on the outlet side, on this bases I might be able to let air in at the top of the radiator. This may mean that I have to move the alternator to were the aircon compressor was to let a clear air parth into the filter for the ram pipes. Also I maybe able to get better flow down the centre pipe of the cooling system by moving it to the centre as well. Tonight I will post photos of what I mean.

Tony

Re: Individual Throttle Bodies and Improved Airflow

Sounds like a good plan. I've always thought that through the middle from right behind the grille would be the best place to suck air from. Just a lot of rearranging to do.

How about the way the lexus LFA has its front air intake?

the large gap between the bodywork and the hood is an air intake

Re: Individual Throttle Bodies and Improved Airflow

As I am not running AC unit I can flip the alternator over and lower it height down as well. This leave a clear area between it and the power steering pump. The other thing I need to do is put a bigger pully on the power steering so it can handle the higher rev with out a problem. Ram pipes in the photo are not the ones I will use.

Finished milling the 6 throttle body skeltons now I need to move on to the end plate and the rollers. Will you keep you posted as progress is made.
