Ah. Mine was too covered in grease and dirt to see I guess. It's probably just to protect the nut to keep it from getting rusty and hard to remove.
My rule of thumb is that if Subaru put it there it may very well be important, so until I find out otherwise, I put it back. Seems to be working ok so far.
