Call your junkyards looking for a LEGACY OUTBACK or a LEGACY GT or LSI with the 2.5 engine, from 1996 or 1997.
And good luck!
We usually pay about $450-$550 for one that has NOT been rebuilt, and more for one that has.
Don't bother looking for a limited slip rear end, they do not exist.

A good rear should run you no more than $100.00.

I got the rear and trans out of the same car, make sure it has the bolt on sideplates with 5 bolts.

In the 1/4 mile I went 15.32 with 4.11 gears and 15.06 with 4.44 gears.

So a 97 outback ltd tranny and rear would work on my 92 lsl? Hm, makes me want to reconsider selling mine then

. Looks like I have some decisions to make in the next couple of days...

my buddy and i are trying to figure out all the details for it now. Then it's just a matter of convincing my mom to front me the money for it and letting her get the whole take off the outback once i put it together with the swapped out parts if possible lol. this could be a very interesting next few days. and sorry, not trying to hijack this thread or anything, just a new owner still learning his way around this car (wanting to add my name to the list) but does anyone know what the difference (if there is one) between the outback and svx rear ends is? i;m getting all excitable and such about the possibilties here....

I just finished 4.11 swap from 96 legacy- seems like the swaps listed would have the thre wire/two wire problem on speed sensor #2. How did you guys resolve the connection
