Police + State = ?

I just call from a "memebr of the fraternal order of police" asking for money for some police fundraiser.
I asked said "law" enforcement officer how it came to be that he got my unlisted number, and why he was calling me at 9pm.
To which he replied "well, we have a service...".
Isn't it interesting that when the police want money they can just start calling random people in their homes and ask for it?

I would like some new wheels. Does anyone know of any police I can call and ask for money?

This is a scam!
the police will never call you looking for money donations.
this scam has been around a while

It's funny to me because at least once a year they call my dad asking for money. (he's a police captain) He always has some interesting questions for them.

Scam??

It may be considered a scam, but then it is legal in most cases. What happens is a fund raising agency will contact a police department and promise to raise "X" amount of money for them IF they can use their name.

Then, the agency starts to raise money using the names legally. BUT, while they do pass on money to the agency as promised it is generally no more than 5% of what is collected. Unfortunately this is legal.

Before you give money to ANY charitable cause check to see what percent goes to the actually recipients and how much is used in "overhead". It might surprise you even with some of the better know charities.

Also, you might check to see which classes of charities are exempt from the "no call list". That might surprise you also.

I was the Chief of a volunteer Fire Department for a number of years. I would get calls from an agency collecting for "Local Fire Departments". I always found it interesting, and I would share this with them, that we never saw 1 cent from this fund raising effort. Once a year, I still get a call form an agency collecting for the fire department and another for the police. No, I don't support them in that way.

tell them you want to speak to their supervisor, and have them remove you from their calling list.

if you want to have fun with them, as they scramble through their script, ask them:

"are YOU a police officer?"
"how much of my donation actually goes to police organizations?"
"where are you located?"
"will the crappy sticker you send me get me out of a ticket?"
"can i have your number and i'll call you back."
"how many police officers balls have you handled?"

Not bad horseface. I got them to quit calling me by initially thanking them for calling me, then telling them I donated money last year (which excited them), then asking them if they could help me (and they agreed). I told them that I was getting audited by the IRS and that they wanted all the information and dollar amount of all the charities that I donated money to. I needed their phone number, address, etc. for IRS. When I asked if I could get his name, they hung up on me and I haven't received a call since.
