power steering hose leak
I have replaced my power steering pump on my 94 svx LS front wheel drive unit. I am now suffering a very nice old faithful type leak on the long hose coming up to the pump from the back part of the motor (is this the return line?)
I need to replace the hose. I tried to noodle the hose thru rock auto but they have specific lengths. With out removing the hose, does anyone know what hose I need to order and then, the best place to order it from? And then, once I get the hose, how hard is it to replace? looks like the spot where it connects underneath is tight to get to.` I love this car and have missed driving it. Any help would be greatly appreciated! regards ken

Re: power steering hose leak
Is it the hi pressure hose or the lo presure?
lo presure would just be a matter of getting hose that is made for that and sizing it yourself. I think that one hose fastens on the pump with a hose clamp ( the return ) and the other ( High pressure) is done with metal fittings. Guess the first step is to find out what is actually leaking. Maybe the "O" ring on the bottom of the pump reservoir? Hope it works out well for you! Keith |

Re: power steering hose leak
Thanks for the replies. Its definitely the high pressure return. I was able to band aid the line with some metal tape and 4 hose clamps. No longer is old faithful in session. I know its temporary. I need to trace the line and see where it mounts underneath. It looks like a tight fit. Anyone ever remove one? Did you need to remove any additional parts for access?

Make sure to support the car with a jack stand, especially if you have your legs under there.

Re: power steering hose leak
The hose runs down and along the bottom of the engine in older (92) models. The hose is there, just in a different location from the newer ones.

Re: power steering hose leak
Yes,the hose runs down and along the bottom of the engine in older (92) models and is in two pieces. The newer models is a one piece hose that runs on top of the engine. You can order either one from Subaru but I replaced my old one with the newer one. Less connections, the better.

Re: power steering hose leak
Ok I have a 92 that I just lost all power steering and I knew that there was trouble with the high pressure hose so I came here to find out. So what I want to know is should I replace it with one hose or two like stock. there is a local shop that can remake it for me in SS wrap as I had him make me a few brake lines and few other lines already. but I don't know what the one piece hose should look like.

Re: power steering hose leak
Personally I would go with the one hose replacement.

Re: power steering hose leak
Well here in Lancaster we had about 8 inches where I live so I took the SVX up to my shop to work on it. I jacked it up and crawled under wile power steering, oil, and salty melting snow dripped on me. I started to remove the high pressure line when I notice a low pressure return line had come completely off. It was the one right beside the high pressure feed, the rubber hose had popped off the metal line. So I proceeded to not take apart the line I did not need to I and put the low pressure back in place and installed a new hose clap. I could find nothing wrong with the old one but I threw it out in spite anyway. So long story short I got the car up and running again with ease this time.
