ABS problems new axles ???
Ok having problems with the ABS. Just as I am coming to a stop the abs kicks in and the ABS system kicks back with about 2-3 seconds of pulsations. According to my mechanic, it's likely one of two things, ABS sensor or a small crack in a surface that the ABS reads off of (or something like that). If it is the latter, the mechanic says that the axle(s) will have to be changed. I have been told by the Subaru dealership (different mechanic) that my boots need to be changed. My question is when I change the axles I guess I should change the boots. Does it make any sense to have any other related work done at the same time. And, if I need axles, where is the best place to order them?
Thanks for any help and suggestions.

Re: ABS problems new axles ???
If the ABS "tone wheel" is cracked, this has nothing to do with the axles. Nothing about the axles has anything to do with the ABS, for that matter. But you might as well have all the work done at the same time. Tone wheels are pricey; be sure that's what you need.
If the CV joint boots need to be replaced, the joints themselves probably aren't far behind. Replace the entire axle unit. You can get remans at any auto parts retailer, and they come with the protective boots in place. There's a diagnostic procedure for checking the ABS electronics; I'd search for that, for starters. dcb |

Re: ABS problems new axles ???
The tone rings on newer Soobs are on the axle themselves, that may be where the mechanic's confusion comes in??
If you can't find axle's locally, get a hold of Tom (www.svxfiles.com) he sells new, not rebuilt for about $80.

Re: ABS problems new axles ???
Yes tone rings are the things I may need. Do they not come on the axles. That's what the mechanic thought. He said he did not think he could find tone rings separately. Are they available separately or do you need the whole axle?
thanks

Again, if you need CV joint boots, you might as well go ahead and replace the axle assemblies. But this has nothing to do with your ABS issue. dcb |

Re: ABS problems new axles ???
Thanks guys when you say expensive how expensive are we talking. I'll just pull the ABS fuse if it's too expensive. I think I can certainly live without ABS.

Re: ABS problems new axles ???
I've forgotten the cost of tone wheels... $150-ish each, I believe. As I suggested before, be sure that's what you need.
I believe it's a bad idea to disable the ABS. dcb |

Re: ABS problems new axles ???
Tone wheels are cast pieces of metal.
They have no moving parts. They just spin with the rotation of the wheel. If they were broken, or missing, then they could be your problem. However, it's much more likely that it is your sensors. Our SVXi have a VERY cool self check system. It will tell you which sensor is bad. (If it is a sensor.) Earthworms site has a how to. http://svx-iw.com/ Go to his site. Go to SVXIpedia. Go to checking error codes. Go to how to check ABS error codes.

Re: ABS problems new axles ???
The mechanic may be assuming they are on the axles as well if his aftermarket supplier does not list it.... which is very likley in this case. I would, for the same reason i doubt there is much demand for tone rings, recommend a sensor check as well.
The statements your mechanic is making in this case are no cause of concern over his ability or honesty BTW, he is just not familiar with the svx.

Re: ABS problems new axles ???
Just an update on the ABS problem. Turns out it was the ABS sensor not tone ring. The sensor wasn't cheap. Anyway I got the car back, new sensor on right wheel, new CV boots and installed winter tires all for just under $1000.00 Cdn. So just over $10.00 US for you Americans
