Satin Black - A primer (pun intended)

After finally finishing the body work for my SVX - ive decided on a 2 stage satin black finish. The car will be shot with primer, normal black base coat, and a standard clear w/flattening agent - this will keep the finish from fading/staining...

Has anyone else done anything like this?

a few examples.

I think the SVreX was painted flat black for awhile (it might still be). I've never liked flat black on a car, to ricer boyish IMHO.

I think flat black is a bad idea too - I'm thinking a knocked down semigloss - not flat.

I saw pictures of a Ferrari f430 painted satin black with a licence plate that read "KILNJOX"
Edit...found the picture. Apparently its some kid's beater

satin black will make any evil looking car eviler...take something like, say...ANY dodge charger, old or new. The only way the svx can pull off satin black is if it has a bit of a facelift...perhaps eyelids, smallcar grill, and front splitters. You'd also need black wheels with a polished lip.Debadge the car completely...get clear corners. do a decent tint job all the way around...and just for a bit of contrast, use a bit of color too...mabey like some kind of pinstripe, or mabey do the "svx" badge below the window..or a GTI-esque stripe around the grill opening. that would sure as hell make the look look right...youd have one evil looking car

Otherwise, no, itd look like ****

EXACTLY!

Rims are already done, eyelids, lowering, mebbe an understated front spoiler.

Nice tint on the windows... I think it will look good with the existing taillight modification on my car.

Rebadge w/silver Alcyone badge in front, guigario badge in back... keeping it understated and slick, not ricer...

not ricer...

please god,
not ricer.

^^Ya, that^^

Probably the only car on the road that is actually intimidating behind you. Even more if it's one of the cop cruisers we have here...

But ya, satin would look cool if done right.

I just sprayed my svx in flat dark grey. The paint series is known as "hot rod flatz" and is a single stage ppg oni series paint with flattener. it was a single stage so it was not topped with clear. its polyurethane so its very durable. I will get some picks up as soon as I can. My reason for going flat was to hide the blemishes in my rear quarter panels as good as i could. Some pricks took my svx on a joy ride a few months back and decided to kick the two rear quarter panels in. Body shop prices were in the ballpark of 2-3 thousand for the repairs so I just did them myself. Its going to be my track/autocross car anyways so the bodywork turning out perfect wasn't my top priority. I think flat looks awesome check out their site and see some of the other 1 gallon flat kit colors they offer. I personaly If I could do it over again would go with their daytona blue pearl, looks hot!

Hmm, their "Plum Crazy Metallic" I think would look good on my Polara since it just needs a little bit more body work before it's ready for paint... Then on to the top and interior... (But it's too stinkin long to fit in my garage so I gotta work on it outside, so painting it'll hafta wait...)

since this topic came back up heres a pic of what the primer tone grey, by tcp global, came out like. Its was a rushed job, but it came out pretty good. I plan on pulling it back down to the metal and reworking the bodywork on the rear quarter panels, then spraying in again this time using an epoxy primer before I paint it. Will most likley go with the same grey tone for the body then use satin black for the hood roof and lower cladding.

So did you ever go through with this? I've already decided I'm going to paint my SVX satin black, but I'd love to see it on another one to give me something to look forward to.

I was actually thinking about doing a satin or semi-gloss navy blue for mine. Would look good with some dark bronze wheels and dark tint.
