Re: OK, I've decided to fix the oil leaks... What else should I replace?
Does anyone know the correct torque value for the valve cover bolts? What about the spark plugs?
I tried to navigate the FSM, but I can't seem to find the section on Valve cover replacement (or Timing Belt service for that matter...) Clarke |

Look in the how-to docs on the forum. The valve cover bolts torque is measured in inch-pounds, though, so make sure you find out and don't overtighten them.

Re: OK, I've decided to fix the oil leaks... What else should I replace?
Just a quick note to tell everyone how impressed I am with Subaruparts.com...
I ordered my parts on Wednesday at 3:00 Eastern time. Since I needed them by Friday, I had to use next day air. Once I placed the order I called to verify the order. They double checked that everything was actually in stock and then, less than 24 hours later, my order arrived on the East Coast. Everything was individually labeled, including the 3 different o-rings I purchased. Shipping was a bit high, but my total cost was still less than what I would have paid at the local dealer even with my 15% discount. I wish I had purchased this a week ago so I could have saved $20+ on shipping, but other than that, I was VERY happy. |

The specifications listed show 10-14 ft-lb. That's pretty vague... I guess I'll pour over the FSM again to look for it. |

10-14 ft./lbs will snap the heads off those bolts. I am pretty sure they are like 45 in./lbs

I was just stating what was in the PDF archive. Perhaps it should be updated? While we are on this subject, how much time should I commit to completing the valve cover gaskets? |

A full day and a 6-pack...hahaha. It can be frustrating, but mostly its just awkward positions and a lot of cursing. I would say if you can do it on a weekend with no other real obligations that is the best way to do it.

The valve cover bolts are shoulder bolts, I run then in until the shoulder bottoms out, then go about a 1/4 turn tighter.

I really wish there was a more detailed writeup on the Timing Belt procedure. If I was more confident in what I was doing I'd try to document it as I went along for others. |

A 10 mm ratcheting wrench will be a HUGE help with the valve covers....

Re: OK, I've decided to fix the oil leaks... What else should I replace?
I replaced mine last summer and the only problem I had was a boot on one coil stayed on the plug and it was a chore digging it out with a pick. You may have better luck.I have never owned a subaru before this one and it took me about 1-1 1/2 hours per side. but I'm no stranger to working on cars.

Re: OK, I've decided to fix the oil leaks... What else should I replace?
I got the right side cover off this afternoon. Not too hard, but the lower bolts were a bee-yatch... I had success getting to them from under the car.
Incidentally, I found the torque settings: Valve Cover Bolt ......................... 35-44 INCH lbs Still looking for the spark plug torque settings. |

Re: OK, I've decided to fix the oil leaks... What else should I replace?
Just snug the spark plugs good. They are not load bearing or structural so torque is not important. What is important is you compress the washer on the plugs so it holds compression in the cylinders.
