Re: Too much timing belt travel...
The pulley can be freely rotated both counterclockwise and clockwise, no apparent issue there. When I grab the sides of the pulley and move it back and forth (towards the engine and then away) there is a bit of play in that it moves slightly. I am uncertain as to whether that is normal. Have you viewed the video, do the camsprockets seem to be rotating fluidly to you?
I inspected the new and old tensioner's prior to assembly and they looked identical. The old had a washer to place on the back of the pulley as did the new one. Both new and old bolts were exact. I even thought that may have been allowing the slack, nope. I reattached the pulley with the old bolt and still had play. |

Re: Too much timing belt travel...
Oh no. All slop that's been noticed is with the belt off. There is plenty of tension on the belt when it's on and the hydraulic tensioner piston is released (pin removed). Should probably post of video of this too to clear up any confusion

As to the slop, there should be virtually no axial movement in the pulley. If there is any radial/axial movement then believe that that pulley/tensioner is bad.

Re: Too much timing belt travel...
Yes, it spun freely. Ugh, a faulty tensioner...there's definitely axial movementalbeit minimal. Another trip to the local parts dealer :/ I will post a video tomorrow however to show you exactly what I am experiencing.

Or, without the belt installed what is your best guess as to the amount of movement, with the mounting bolt propperly torqued?

Re: Too much timing belt travel...
without the belt un-installed? I am assuming you're asking what's the movement of the tensioner (along the axis, moving the pulley towards the engine and then away towards the radiator) with the belt off? Nothing scientific, but I would say less than the width of a finger nail. I mean it's very minor but noticable. I went and checked all the other pulleys and they had absolutely no movement.

Boy these are tasty Margaritas! So the tensioner pulls in and out?!? When tight?!? Or does it have a wobble?

Re: Too much timing belt travel...
When properly torqued (32 lbs) the pulley moves north/south when looking at it head on. Heard to tell if there is any unusual east/west movement with the belt off as it swings widely.

Re: Too much timing belt travel...
does the axis of movement change if you rotate the cam?

Re: Too much timing belt travel...
I was finally able to get some time and shoot a video of the tensioner "play" I am referring too. See video link below. Is this normal? I am thinking this may be the cause of my timing belt travel as seen in other videos.

Re: Too much timing belt travel...
That's your problem. I can't tell in the video, does the inner collar move or just the outer pulley?

Re: Too much timing belt travel...
The entire pulley moves. Upon closer look the pulley is actually sliding along the bolt. The bolt is bottoming out and as a result cannot "dig" deeper into the mounting hole. The pulley came with a washer that mates to the back of the pulley. I am thinking that a thicker washer will solve the problem and eliminate that gap.

Re: Too much timing belt travel...
Are you sure you have that flanged tube on properly? I was confused as to which side was correct the first time I did mine. Now I take note upon removal. I'd actually don't recall even now if the washer faces the block or the rad. I'm sure someone can answer.
