I forgot to tell you that I did have to "drill" out the rivets in the brackets first, but still, it was no trouble at all. Be sure to keep all the original spacers ... With those, the threaded ends fit perfectly. Good Luck! Rico

Re: Hood struts: FYI
So when done it will only cover the extended portion of the cylinder. I could make a shorter one if I want the hood only 1/2 up. That's what I do at car shows.

Re: Hood struts: FYI
Just to confirm....McMaster-Carr part, right? EDIT: I see the part now. Per your prior post, do you think 60lbs would get the job done?

Re: Hood struts: FYI
Drilling out the rivet of the OEM bracket and using the original spacers (with photos) can be found HERE.
This is by far the easiest way to replace the hood struts and is what I am currently using on the polo. Craig, I think 60 lbs. is too light to raise the hood easily and hold it securely. .

Re: Hood struts: FYI
I'll second that 90# choice.
Since I'm here: Nate, all those ball studs I gave you are for the hood strut custom replacement documented elsewhere in the forum.

I ordered mine yesterday! These are much cheaper than the SPD hardware ones. Hopefully quality and durability are as good as price

Re: Hood struts: FYI
Perhaps I am missing something or it isn't quite as intuitative, but the link posted by John instructs to "drill" out the rivet which holds the nylon bushing together. How exactly is the rivet drilled out?

Re: Hood struts: FYI

The rivet will actually break apart and you can push it out. Then you will see the plastic bushing in the hole in the bracket. I have even done it by hand, holding the bracket in one hand and slowly drilling into the indent with the other. This is a soft rivet so you don't need a lot of speed, just a sharp bit. Just a note: your plastic bushing will be black. I painted mine gray for clarity of the photos) .

The mcmaster part numbers all show a 5/16"-18. Which isnt an issue on the frame/body mount as I can swap to a 5/16" nut, but the hood mount mount is tapped metric. I am trying to avoid a re-tap on the hood mount holes, to 5/16, and would consider just ordering a new set given the relative affordability.Which end would be the "right ends"?Ballsocket?eyelet?threaded?
