The new 2014 Forester XT's only come with cvt's and iirc in manual "x-mode" they replicate 8 gears.

I first noticed something was not normal with the Murano when it only had D and L as a forward gear selection. No other options. Lots of torque off the line. Unfortunately, when my daughter relieved me behind the wheel, the Dooley County, GA Sherriff's Department decided she was a "super speeder" (86 MPH in a 60 MPH zone, an interstate drop down in that County). I'll cover it since she said, "But Dad, you taught us to drive like this".

We've had 2 CVT subarus now - a 2010 and a 2012 outback. No problems so far. Gas mileage is great for a car this heavy. To improve mileage I tend to use manual mode on long trips just so I can hold "6th" gear on long stretches without it "downshifting" when I want to speed up a little or to drop to 5th for a hill and not rev up as high as it would if in D.
There have been very few problems reported on subaruoutback.org with the CVT. It will rev right up to redline in manual mode but in D it will come up short of redline if you floor it.

I haven't tried it with the cruise control on. I'm not sure if it will work or not.

If you are coming to a complete stop with the cruise still engaged, it will progressively downshift my itself to "2" or "1". You can't "resume" where you were automatically in the manual mode. you have to shift. You caan shift up to the desired speed and "SET" If I sense I am coming into traffic or stop and go, I just move the shifter back to "D" .
