help,turn key to start,no sound

my 92 svx happened from time to time,about 20-30% of time,
when i turn the key to start,all the lights show,but when turn key
further to start,no sound at all.

Before,i have to try again,and it usually starts after the 2-3 times.

Today,i went up to the snow parking lot,0 degrees cel.,and take me 6-7 times to start.

Is this the starter problem?or something else?

Is someone has a spare for sale?Thanks.

You will want to do a search on this, try seaching for "starter relay bypass"

Could be the neutral safety switch, which is the mechanism that prevents starting the car in any drive gear. Try shifting into Neutral next time this happens and see if starts then.

Agreed. Test for this first.

It's either the ignition relay or the park-neutral safety switch. The ignition relay goes through your steering wheel and is a bugger to replace but not totally terrible. The park-neutral safety switch is located underneath your center console (like directly below the emergency brake) and probably easier to fix.. just depends on how easy it would be to move/remove the center console off.

A while back, I had an ignition switch issue and with that fixed.. now, I think I too suffer from the neutral switch issue.

Better to fix the real problem instead of bypassing it. Replace the starter relay. It's held in position by the steering column bolt. DO NOT totally remove the bolt. Just loosen and the relay should have a slot that permits pulling it down so it can be removed.

cos at first i thought it was my loosen ignition switch that present the problem,after the cover came out,there was a screw that hold the switch
that was lossen,.But after tightened,the problem still exist.
So,may be i hav to check the relay first.

So you DID try starting in Neutral(N) with no luck?

Tiger your model does not have the relay under the dash as Lee says, this is only on the US models.
You need to fit a 30 amp Bosch relay to the starter solenoid that is on the starter motor. Any auto electrical shop will know what this is and fit it for you.

That is a good link Eric, but only for members with a US model car

. As I said, the JDM, Aust, Nz, Euro. models do not have that relay.

I definitely bow to an expert on other than US models, But----I am curious. What type of relay do the other models have? Of course you know that the relay I reference is exactly the same Bosch 30 Amp model as in the bypass fix.

Not being confrontational here, but I don't think so Lee...
the bypass mod is a 4 terminal Bosch relay and the factory one, the 5 terminal one could even be Bosch, but not necessarily a Bosch, that is used in conjunction with the SVX factory oriented security system circuit is a 5 terminal relay, using a normally closed position of contacts during the start process.

This 5 terminal relay is not energized during the start process.

The factory 5 terminal is also used in conjunction with the security system to prevent starting if alarm security is violated.

Im still betting 5 forum Pesos it's his Neutral Safety Switch, he says he hears no clicking or anything when he turns the key. He hasn't verified he tried starting it in Neutral yet..... I believe this test is the most simple to do and easily eliminate the NSS as a cause, as you only have to move the gear selector a couple clicks down.... not exactly hard to check.

Just my 2¢

The odds are always against the Neutral Safety Switch. In a case of just trying to start the car over and over again till it finally starts, the Neutral Safety Switch would almost be a dead issue.

I wouldn't put money on the notion that there isn't a "Bosch relay" buried somewhere in the vicinity of the car that does the same thing as the 5 terminal relay does on ours. With a wiring diagram, it would be a snap to find it.

Maybe someone with one from those other country's would be nice enough to attach one??

I have been trying to up-load the circuit, but it won't do it at the moment.

As far as I know, only the US cars came with a security system. The Australian car's circuit only has the, Ignition switch, and the gearbox selector switch in the starter circuit. As it is usually starter in the Park position, that is the one that gets worn the most.

So in Tigers case, if it will start in N, it is the gearbox switch. If it won't start in either P or N, it is the ignition switch, or some other obscure wiring fault.

It appears that the US security relay has a normally closed contact that ages to not make a good contact. So 'you all' have a third set of contacts to give trouble.
