Re: New STi

THE ALMIGHTY INFINITE SUBARU LOOP:

1) Pictures of any redesigned model are released.
2) The masses throw up a little.
3) The masses see the car in person.
4) The masses are less disappointed.
5) The next generation of buyers will kill to defend their Subarus.
6) Repeat.

For whatever reason, Subaru's upcoming generations never look good in print. I remember seeing the current Forester online and being rather repulsed. I've got one in my garage right now, though, because seeing it in person made it a completely different vehicle.

Go fig.

Yeah, your probably right. One of my brothers who owns a older WRX tells my you don't buy a WRX\STi for the looks, you buy one despite the looks.

I agree... I like the utility, purposeful, muscular look of the 2004-2006. I drove the STi pictured below for almost 5 years. Loved it... it is just pure raw brutal performance straight from the factory. They aren't pretty (like the SVX) but they are functional and mean looking.

I like the blistered front fenders... and the rear fender attachments so they could widen the wheels a half an inch in 2005. The upper rear vane spoiler above the rear window for the 2006 MY directed air to the top of the rear wing. It bought a second or so around the Nurburgring. Thats what these cars are all about... Evolution. Every year an improvement to get around the Ring faster than the previous year. Mistubishi does this as well with their Lancer Evo. This all makes sense in Subaru's slogan for the STi Type RA... "Keep Attacking the Nurburgring."

Of coarse under the skin is a collection of some of the best components Subaru makes! Form follows function to the extreme.

wrong. i loved them - previous two (1997, 2002) and current two cars (2005's) are Subarus. i can't do it anymore, i'm done.

the WRX/STi and Forester haven't looked good since 2005, the Tribeca never looked good, and with the new Legacy, Subaru now has an entire lineup of stupid-looking cars.

Re: New STi

Yeah, for me subaru exists now in two forms and two only:

1- SVX
2- 99 WRX

These are the real subies.

OMG, I mistakenly thought the 2010 Legacy was just a Chinese brand at first glance... com'on.. what were they thinking?

Seconded. I'd commend Subaru for the stepping back to sedan, but still, its looks are still (IMO) worse than pre-2007 Imprezas.

Another thing that I don't understand in Subaru styling is that they cannot agree on a grille style. Almost any other manufacturer has his own style. Look at BMW, for example:

See a pattern? One does not have to be a car guru to see "IT'S A BMW" basically splattered all over the grille - take any year, model, trim. Now, look at Subaru:

Each model, each model year has it's own styling of the grille...

Re: New STi

Far as STI goes, I like the 05 the best.
Subaru has really fallen off on looks far as I am concerned.

Then again I love how my 2.5RS coupe looked.
I like it better than the new look, and 4 doors.

For reference:

But my judgment is impaired, as explained by letItSnow.

I think Subaru made a mistake by discontinuing the coupes. I hate that they no longer sell a 2 door. As for STI I do like the hatchbacks but I hate the sedans. I sort of like the new Outback and i definitely like the Forester and Tribecca.

I also disagree that they need a consistant grill. After all, that ugly Pontiac grill that they stuck on everything probably killed the company.

Nevermind the fact that Pontiac scored 29th out of 34 in reliability. It's obviously the grille style which caused the brand's demise.

Re: New STi

One of my many complaints about the new Subarus is that they just aren't ugly enough. Consider some of the cars I've been seen piloting over the last 11 years (both mine and family/friend's).

'87 Justy
'87 GL10 sedan
'87 XT
'84 BRAT
'03 Baja
'98 Forrester
'92 Legacy sedan
'92 SVX

With the exception of the Lego those cars are all very strange looking vehicles. I think this latest WRX gets back to their roots by proclaiming "I'm ugly, and if you don't like it I'll throw you in the mud." Subaru needs to embrace the quirkyness that's made them stand out for the last 30+ years. I was just looking at a 360 for sale earlier today, and man that thing had a serious ugly to it. I love them for it.

Ugly: It's what makes a Subaru a Subaru.

Can't agree more minus the Baha. They're just too similar to the aztec in the WTF were they thinking catagory.

Sean, the coupe was nothing more than a waste of a car as it was really just a sedan with some sheet medal changes and structual re-engineering. Resulting in a "fat chick" in fact it weighed more then a similary equipped wagon deigned by the idiot who had a secret affection for the hot Ply. Duster.

The Baja is my mom's and I couldn't agree more on the WTF point. That's why I've got a standing offer of $4000 on it. She's gonna keep driving it 'till it's worth that, then that ugly/slow pig is all mine. I loves me some ugly Subaru.

To me, this is the best design. I wish they would go back to it with the sti engine and drivetrain. It would be great to have that light weight RS with 300hp. If only they had imported the 22b
