Rattling Noise
So I have this strange rattle/scraping. It seems to be coming from between the engine and the transmission. I thought it might be the flex plate to torque converter bolts so I checked and everything is tight.
The heat shields don't seem to be the problem. I put my hand on them while they we still cool and they didn't seem to be vibrating. Also it is the worst in the morning. I am going to try and get some video tomorrow morning if these videos suck too much ![]() http://s661.photobucket.com/albums/u...t=100_2717.flv http://s661.photobucket.com/albums/u...t=100_2718.flv

Re: Rattling Noise
No, it's definitely towards the back of the engine... (That's were I was, but it's a little dark). It's not a bad bearing sound like a grinding, it's more the da da da da da. It's not really that periodic, it seems... loose? I'll get a movie tomorrow from the inside the car so there isn't so much other noise.

Re: Rattling Noise
Alright, I think this is a little better video. It's still dark and grainy, but I think it captures the sound i'm talking about pretty well. You can hear it the best from about 11seconds to 27seconds when i'm near the front wheel.
http://s661.photobucket.com/albums/u...t=100_2720.flv Some potentially helpful background info: I replaced the transmission this summer. This noise didn't come about until about a month later. I did checked the flex plate bolts and they were tight. The sound goes away when the car heats up, after ~15-30 min This might be unrelated, but when I manually downshift to 3rd, the transmission doesn't slow the car down. So, say I'll be going 40mph or so and I'll downshift from D to 3rd. The rpms drop to about 1000rpm and the car is just coasting when it should be stuck in 3rd and slowing down. Then the rpms will spike and slow the car in a jolt, then start coasting again. It will just coast.... jerk... coast... jerk. All my other gears will downshift correctly, but not 3rd. Any thoughts or opinions welcome. Thanks

Re: Rattling Noise
So, my car decided to stop working. It starting acting like a slipping clutch in a manual (i'm not sure how that translates to autos...). Then I discovered transmission fluid leaking.
This is what I found: (note:The car was turned on a second before the video starts) http://s661.photobucket.com/albums/u...t=100_2721.flv Torque converter? or is my transmission shot? My only thought is that when I replaced the transmission this summer, I used my old svx torque converter. I read that the smaller TC's can't handle the torque of the svx. So maybe mine was contaminated or damaged... not quite sure.

Re: Rattling Noise
So after looking around, it seems like it could be the oil seal for the transmission, or the torque converter. Either way, the tranny is coming out
![]() So does anyone know how to determine if the TC is bad? Is there anything else that could be the culprit? Is there a way to determine if my tranny is bad? going bad? fine? (Chilton's transmission section is not very extensive, at all ![]() Basically, I'm going to take the tranny out again and wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions for how to go about diagnosing this problem. The last thing I want it to take that thing out again... Thoughts?

Re: Rattling Noise
Does anyone know if any other Subaru torque converters are compatible with the svx. Like a 3.0 outback/forester or the tribeca. Svx torque converter from subaruparts.com: $611.14
